Hi im thinking bout buyin a BA XR6 turbo ute, im looking rould the 2004-2006 models. I just have a few questions. Whats better to have a manual or auto as in performance wise if the car is stock standard? Also are there any known problems with XR6 turbo utes (example noisey gear boxes) And lastly ive been looking online (Carsales Ebay etc) and ive noticed that most of the utes are up to 120.000kms and still wanting $16000 is that to much? as I think its is.... Thanks :)

Hi mate

Is there any reason other than price that you are narrowing your search to BA's?

I am in the same sort of position. I have actually found a car and pending finance should hopefully have it in the next week or so. Funnily enough I was originally look at AU-BF XLS's. It wasn't until I did a fair bit of research that I realised XR6T's are only a little bit more expensive and I may as well get the car I want rather than going back to an XLS after doing my homework on the XR. I then started reading a lot on here and also FordMods.com and also FordForums Australia. The general impression is the BF's had a few minor but important upgrades over the BA's. Pretty much I was told, go for a BF if you can be patient enough to find the right car/price.

For example, the auto transmission on the BF was completely new and a big step up. They went from the aging 4speed auto to the German built 6speed ZF auto box. I believe the manual 5 transmissions were similar if not the same between BA and BF.

Will you be modding and it looking for more power down the track?

(Take my post with a grain of salt as I am only knew and don't have any first hand experience with these cars, I am just going off what I have read!)

The ba1s had the POS 5 speed, after that the 6 speed manual came in. If yout keeping it stock, the manual is alot more fun.

utes hold their value more so yes prices will be a little high.

go the 6 speed as henz said.

but if you plan on modifying in the future, re consider the model your looking at.

Nah mate most of it's pretty much on the money except the part about 5 speed in the BA and BF. You've obviously put time into your research, good stuff.

Mjobs most of those questions come up on nearly a daily basis these days as these car become cheaper and cheaper to buy. All I can ask is that people please try and be a bit more specific with question Eg. "Whats better to have a manual or auto as in performance wise if the car is stock standard", is pretty much impossible to answer correctly. Also have a good read around the forum too especially threads that are marked 'important' in each category.

It will also help you get more of an idea on those subjects rather then just the opinions of a few people that post in this thread.

Thanks for all the replies, :) as for looking at BA's its mainly to do with price "Bang for my buck." BF's are that much more expensive... but are they worth it? I was originaly lookin at the holdens vy/vz but soon came to realise that for the same money I could get a XR6 turbo ute which to me makes sence go for the XR6T...? I can say that I wont be seriously modifying the ute to begin with as ive never had a turbo car let alone a turbo ute so it should do me fine... Well for a while :P Again thanks for the replies it has helped :)

the ba has the valve spring issue, one of the first things to change, the 5 speed manual and 4 speed auto being not very strong at all, my 2c worth is wait around a bit and save up for a bf with a 6 speed, while you will still have valve spring issues with early bf's the boxes are so much stronger and the 6 speed manual is so awsome!! once you get used to the standard power of the turbo and you find out what they can do and how little you really have to spend to do it you will be kicking yourself you didnt pour the extra few g's into a ute with a 6 speed box
