Unmarked cop cars are easy to spot, god help us if they take a leaf out of the VicRoads TSS unmarked car manual. The lights are actually in behind the grill, not on the dash where everyone can see them. In fact the TSS cars look awesome with lights on, they have strobes in the headlights and reverse lights.

I am starting to see a lot more unmarked territories than I've ever cared for lately.

You must be especially gifted. Im sure the spotting ease varies throughout the States.

There is a black bf turbo sedan based at dapto nsw with black on white plates [bDC-17K]

It also has a towball fitted.

The plate is easy to remember bdc = Bottom dead centre lol, I never forget it

The Vic cars are all permanent lighting, they no longer use the magnetic style roof mounted lights any more.

You only have to see the center dash, or rear right parcel shelf to work out if its unmarked car.

Black VE SV6 on the way into Bris CBD the other day.... 3 aerials on the back window, LEDs mounted behind the rear headrests. Followed him for about 10ks - 2 car lengths back and stuck to him. Not sure if the SV6 badges were real though - sounded a little more than 6 cylinders but he was being very carefull on throttle.

More often these days, here in NSW, I think your all seeing RTA, local council rangers and ministry of transport vehicles. They all seem to like the unmarked thing and the level of unease it protrudes to the rest of the public. Should be all charged for impersonating police I farking thinks.
