Engine Stall When Highbeams Are On

hello all..

last night I have been doing a lot of driving (~220km) then towards the end of my trip I switched on my highbeams and everything switched off..

Luckily when I turned off the highbeams the engine started and everything returned to normal. I repeated it again with the radio off, heater and fan off much to the same result.

I gave it roughly 10 minutes then tried again and nothing happened.. I then got home turned off the engine and turned it back on and it started as normal

I started the car this morning and all was working fine.. there was no struggling when I tried to start I was able to turn all the high drawing devices(radio fog lights and aircon) on (at idle) and nothing happened

Does anybody have any idea what may have caused it?

could be any number of things

check the battery terminals are clean and done up , make sure you have a good ground connection , if you have a multi meter it wouldnt hurt to also check to make sure your alternator is charging the battery also

was it only doing it with the high beams and nothing else that draws a lot of current , have you checked to make sure the fuse fitted is the correct size for your high beams maybe you have a short somewhere on that circuit

are you the first owner somebody else has put a bigger rated fuse in than is meant to be fitted hence the large current draw ?

could even be short somewhere befor the fuse I think the relay for the high beams is in the fuse box under the bonnet maybe you have a short on the relay ?

although dont qoute me on this ive never looked myself

I did have the heater core replaced about a month ago but it had been working fine since then.. ill double check the fuses incase one had been swapped.

after reading my post I didnt write what I was trying to say it very clear

in regards to the fuse I was trying to say maybe you have a dead short somewhere but the fuse is rated to high and isnt blowing

id check all your fuses (both to make sure they arent blown and are the correct current size ) also and make sure they make good contact look for hot spots on the contacts of the fuses if they feel a bit lose when removing them

if your alternator is charging.id bet its a faulty battery sounds like it has a break inside on a connecter that joins the plates isee it a bit in my work it can be an intermittant problem.

after all this, it stopped like 20 mins after it started and hasnt come back since.

battery is fine and alternator and fusebox and relays are fine.
