Whats A Cheap Intercooler Upgrade?

Hey guys,

Getting the entire exhaust upgraded soon and then off for a tune. But that's where the funds run out. So, no PW stage 3 intercooler just yet

Just wondering what type of CHEAP intercooler I should keep my eyes open for? (keep in my I will be upgrading within 12 months.)

Currently I have a stock BA cooler but am wondering if there is any cooler out there that I can just swap for a little better performance?

Any ideas would be appreciated.

there are monza ones on ebay that replace stock cooler and hooks up to standard pipes, not the best but better than standard. you should wait and get the exhaust and tune done when you get a proper cooler

I dont see the point of getting a cheap cool then upgrading in 12months. Do it right the first time. Spent the ~$1k on a decent cooler instead of the ~$300 you want to spend on a cheap cooler. Save having to install it twice and get much better performance

Depends on how much power he wants to make.

If you plan on going all out (350rwkw) then yes get a big cooler with 3" hot/cold side piping and a proper intake setup. If you are only looking for low 300 then a smaller setup should be good.

But to make the big numbers you will need a lot more then just an exhaust, IC and tune.

Will need to change intake piping.

I ran a 116mph 12.902 1/4 with fuel problem around the 1000ft and 2.4 60ft on street tyre's.

Std internal BA, X-Force 3.5system, Valve Springs, Injectors, Plenum.

T56 box.

Boost 15psi

Or just pick up a F6 cooler if dont want to do intake piping.

The kits come with the new "SIR-X" core that is supposed to flow a lot better and is 100mm thick as opposed to the 76mm GT series. Comes with the cold side piping too. Not bad considering how much they are.

The GT Spec intercooler is made from T6061 alloy, has a low pressure drop of less than 0.2 at 15psi and has been tested at 65psi. Inlet and outlets are 3" with a flow rate of 850cfm and with a static weight of 5.7kg.

The pipe kits are made from fully polished mandrel bent alloy and take the shortest rout possible. Through extensive research and development, HDi / Hybrid have manufactured some of the best kits available in todays market.

XtRmn8 - Are you saying the XR core out flows the GT Series?

It outflows the factory setup with the SIR-X which is getting rid of the U Turn from outlet and shortening the pipe work

as well the cooler flows and works better than the factory cooler.

I was told at the time of purchase that the XR kit was good with its ease of fit etc, but did not support the power

the GT Series could, hence why I went the GT Series.

Unless the people at Momentum have got the specs of the two mixed up.

Could you tell me what info you have based your claim that the XR6 HDI out performs the GT Series.

What I have found strange is that HDI have done with a web page on the fraudulent coolers out on the market

stating that theres are all Logo stamped on the end plates with a 3000lb press as per my GT Series, and all

the XR6 ones I have seen dont seem to have such stamping, as well as the one on that ebay link doesn't have either.

Hey, thanks for the replies guys, but yeah, I was looking more along the lines of a cheap $100 upgrade like a F6 cooler or something similar, didn't want to screw around with pipes etc.. just wanted to see if replacing the stock BA cooler would give me a little better porformance.

I looked at those coolers on ebay and the other sites you posted, and yes they are good, but out of budget for this round of mods. But thanks again for taking the time to reply.

After reading your comments, I found some other threads in the forum and I now know I need to incorporate some other mods to see safe power gains.. (ie: valve springs, wastegate and actuator etc..)

So, thanks again guys.. you have given me a better understanding on the direction I need to go now.
