Anyone had a close look at the XR6T console and given any thoughts to fitting an aftermarket stereo? I have the Premium audio in mine and while its a pearler at the moment there will come a time when its due for an upgrade to something better. That dash is going to be a bugger to modify in any fashion that would look ok. The whole plastic facia could be swapped for a custom version made by the audio pro guys but methinks this would be very expensive.

This would also render the ICC display redundant to all audio functions as well. I would hate that. Unless the units these days have some data output that can 'talk' to the cars ICC and display any relevant information, but I don't think the manufacturers have gotten their act together enough for that capability.

food for thought guys and gals..

cheers to the forum.

ps cars done 450Kms and performing brilliantly, washed it twice already (hey its black), and paid $1.05 per litre for a tank of fuel (Yikes). You get that..

My understanding on the ICC unit is ,that you cannot play with it .We have customers who require no radio fitted to the vehicle. We cannot do this as the whole ICC unit controls /talks with other parts of the vehicle .

The Tech guys tell me there are special instructions on installing the ICC unit for waranty repairs, hence "if it aint broke don't mess with it"

But someone will cos boys will be boys

I too have investigated this one. The gentleman who designed the ICC is a good friend of mine. I've discussed the viability of adding aftermarket stereo systems to my XR6T. Wally's pretty much on the money - it's near impossible to change the existing ICC, because it uses a CAN which is integrated with several other important parts of the vehicle (ABS etc). I'm going to install a 'parallel' audio system in mine. Basically running the audio in parallel to the ICC unit, whilst utilising the same speakers and amps. I'm going to modify the glove box to hold a slim-line head deck. This should take up about half it's space, leaving room for the essentials. I know it's not everyone cup-of-tea, but after having stereo systems stollen from my car on 7 different occasions in NZ, you learn to get pretty smart about where everything positioned. I'll be running the entire system from remote (stacker, MP3 Player, 5.1 surround etc), so there's really no need to ever access the head-deck.

Oh, and I'm installing on of the best alarms on the market too!!! :D

I've spent quite a bit of money upgrading the audio system in my current car (EL Falcon), so when I ordered my XR6T I told them that I wanted the audio system put into the new car. They ummed and ared and said that they could do some of it but not all. They said that they wouldn't be able to put in the deck (because of the ICC & the whole centre part of the dash essentially being one piece). The other thing they were concerned with was the rear speakers. They are a different shape. Oval speakers in the BA, circular in my EL. In the end I decided it was going to get too messy (not to mention costly), so I just decided to get the premium system instead, which I'm led to believe is pretty bloody good anyway.

The premium system is very good.. i like it and in my previous car had around a $10K system in it. This is nothing like that but is still pretty good.

And to expand on XR8Chic's question, does anybody know what all the input/outputs on the Premium Audio are? I have the Aux Audio Input jack (well, its being fitted next week), but I'm wondering what else was available.

XR8 chick and I are thinking along the same lines. I didn't want to wait 2-3 months for a car so I got what I was given - which meant I couldn't get premium sound. I'm therefore hoping that the are some RCA outputs sitting there that I can plug into an amp to get things going. If there isn't any RCA's I was even considering using line input from the speaker wires into an RCA adaptor (did this with a std VT Late model camira deck and it worked well.) My dealer is trying to tell me that any modification - even downstream as I've just outlined - will affect the head unit. I can't believe that! He also tells me that the only difference between premium sound and standard is the coloured head unit, sub woofer and dedicated amp for the sub, so the other speakers and the amount of power going to them is the same in the std & premium systems. Is this true and does anyone have any other info?

Regards

Can the speakers in BA be changed does anyone know? I need to know ASAP because I pick up my BA next week and want to remove the Pioneer 6x9 4ways, 6" splits and amps from my current car, but only if I can use them again in the BA. If I can't I'll save myself $50 or so and just leave them in the car when I sell it.

The premium also adds tweeters in the A pillars which would be tricky to add your self. These make most of the differnce to the sound improvement from the standard to premium audio l think.

The sub gains its own amp, but l also thought the main amp power was increased, but l'm not sure. In dash 6 stacker is also added.

l am happy with the premium sound, for what it costs l think its fine.
