Awd And Rwd Question

The front wheels gripping around corners do help but most performance AWD's include decent tyes and suspension from the factory. Not so much on your base model impreza (but its not fast enough to worry) but Nissan / Subaru / Mitsi know that people who buy an R, and Evo or STi will probably track them occasionally so they get a helping hand from the start and a bucketload of aftermarket handling aids.

You can still make a light AWD slide Dean. I'm sure there are some video's from the truck...

We call them skids, AWD owners call them heli's! But its easier to break stuff. STi's and RA's are better with dccd of course.

There is article in October "Wheels" magazine - "Wheels Handling Olympics" - check under the Slalom results. 4WD or FWD or RWD, it depends on the car, its size, weight distribution, its suspension set up, its power output, its brakes......in fact the whole package. According to the magazine (most readers probably disagree) the result as followed:

2 cars, same motor, same weight (give or take for extra weight in awd system), same power, same suspension, same wheels same tyres, but one RWD and one AWD

Honestly lots more in it than that.

New GTR is 1750 + driver yet it easily would destroy anything that we would throw at it on track

Lambo Gallardo AWD is 1600kgs

Buggatti Veyron AWD is 1900kg

Weight is clearly a big factor (lighter something is, the less effort will be required to move it) but AWD does make a difference (but u need to really own or drive one a lot to understand).

But like I said (and Kieran said simply) Most performance AWD's will be better balanced, have better tyres (although not always as wide so there might be less rubber on the road) and better suspension than a big family sized cruiser. So they should, they are essentially street cars designed for the occasional competitive track day. Dont get me wrong, there are many RWD's that handle brilliantly and are well balanced but just not the fords. Doesnt make them a bad car though, its just the serve a different purpose. Lots of power and lack of traction!

Same car, same weight, same power an AWD will win for most drivers I think. Any 32R owners want to go RWD for us
