October 22, 200718 yr #1 Hey guys well to start I work for a well know truss company, I started a year ago there as truss builder pretty crap money but I stuck at it 3 weeks ago I was offered a job as a wall framer which is pretty good money, but its off and on work. But when its on it hard work and long hours but good money which I dont mind. But now here is my delima, I have now been offered a job in the office which involves "detailing"Which is pretty much is plan designing, Now they have offered to pay for me to go do a taff course to bring me up to speed with the programing, which is called MI TEK.So in term this means a desk job and a company car, and the pay is a little lower than what I get know but still its just shy of grand take home they reckon. But its consistant unlike my job now.So the thing is, ever since I was 16 I have been on the tools and love working hard, I find if im not working I get bored, so im a little concernd about a desk job.Which is my delima. So do I take the desk job that could offer a better future but not be the right thing for me, or stay on the tools working my ass off but I enjoy doing it.So all in all what would you do, any feed back from tradys, people that may have done the same move or people who already work at a desk what are your thought as its doing my head in, I know at the end of the day its my choice but I would still like to know what you would do.CheersMichael.
October 22, 200718 yr #2 take the desk job, get the tafe credentials, if its not for you, later on you can go back to hands on, at least youve got something else under your belt, my 2 cents....
October 22, 200718 yr #3 The better the eduction the better off you are.Give it a go, as laner said if you dont like it you can always go back to swinging that hammer.
October 22, 200718 yr #4 Move around and get as much experience and qualifications as possible. It will only help you out in future promotions.
October 22, 200718 yr #5 Seems like you have answered your own question. Stick with what you enjoy doing and what you are best at. We all have to work for many years.I personally would not want to do that in a job I couldn't stand.Money isn't everything particularly when the difference is only marginal.
October 22, 200718 yr #6 Do the course, give it a go for a couple off months then hit them up for a pay rise .If they say no go back on the tools.
October 22, 200718 yr #8 Mate, there's one of everything on this forum. I'm a detailer and like your plant, we also use the Mitek software. Been doing it for about 18 months now. There is a hell of a lot to take in, especially if you have no on-site building experience, which I didn't. It can be bloody stressful and of course there's a lot of responsibility put on you, but you probably know this already. It's hard to know whether or not there's a future in it as a career, I'd like to think there is. From detailing you could easily move on to be a draughtsman or something similar. Plus, when you get used to pissed off builders telling you they're gonna punch your face in, you can handle any sort of other customer service jobs the future might hold for you.

We all have to work for many years.I personally would not want to do that in a job I couldn't stand.Money isn't everything particularly when the difference is only marginal.I totally agree with Buf-Phoon. The reason I say this Mike is cause I was in the same boat as you a couple of years ago when I was promoted to work in the office away from my Everday job at what I loved doing.I took the risk and accepted this promotion but after stressful week's of training I found that this was not me and decided to go back to my old position. Look the case may be different for you but my advise would be to make sure u gather all the information you can get b4 you take this offer cause the last thing u want is to do the same thing as what I did which was rather embarassing when notifying my manager. I have learnt my lesson and will definately stick to what I'm best at, and at the same time enjoy my work rather than doing something that I dont like.hope this helps mate,San.
