Man charged with shooting at intruders

June 27, 2007 - 7:49AM

A man has been charged after allegedly firing a shot through the front door of his home in south-west Victoria to scare off intruders.

Police said the man, 43, fired one shot from a rifle through the front door of the home in McNeil Avenue, Geelong East, about 10pm (AEST) on Tuesday night.

Would-be intruders had allegedly thrown rocks through the front window and cut the home's power supply before trying to jemmy open the front door.

They fled after the man, who was inside with a woman and young girl, allegedly fired the shot.

Police recovered the rifle and charged the man with conduct endangering life and firearm offences.

He has been bailed to appear at the Geelong Magistrates Court on August 9.

Hopefuly the courts will see the guy is only doing what comes natural (protecting family) and drop all charges

It's a pitty he didn't hit one of the tools.

There might be more too it. Shooting through a door could be considered reckless. Imagine if you were driving past in a car and copped a bullet in the side of the head.

While the guy was protecting his family, he should have waited for a clear shot and blowen the perps away. He would not have been charged for shooting a crim, but I think it was the way he shot, rather than him actually shooting.

A guy here in NZ shot a guy who was trying to rob his gun shop with a machete, gave him a round to the stomach, and got charged by the police. Needless to say he was found not-guilty. Seems like a blatant waste of tax payers money charging him though! If he hadn't shot the guy, all the guns that he would have stolen would have wound up in gang members hands and been used to shoot/kill more innocent people. I think the police need to start upholding laws relating to self-defence rather than instantly trying to charge the person who had the weapon.

So we should just take the blokes word for it that that's what happened?

Shot guns are far safer to shoot at intruders than rifles......

Everyone knows that there is less chance of collateral damage..

FFS the Yanks kill a couple of hundred Iraqi civilians weekly with overspray, will never see them in court..!!!
