In the last year I took the heads off two cars that only run BP 98. The ports are clean as and the area which takes the brunt of the air and fuel in the combustion chamber is clean as also. They are definately a cleaner fuel

The only time I don't run 98 is when it's not available on a road trip, otherwise I'll run 95. I've never put regular in it so I don't know if the difference in performance is noticable.

Link to Shell V-Power technical-marketing information

The above article is exceptionally well written and explains the technologies behind the marketing claims, including the rationale behind the inclusion of friction modifiers in fuel.

Finally, for a high performance fuel promotion, the company selling the material has seen fit to include numbers in its performance claims, albeit somewhat soft and couched in disclaimer. Nevertheless there are numbers... which is a huge improvement from the usual marketing efforts involving CGI horses running along the beach and exotic cars generating improbable water effects whilst driving through puddles. (Note this type of informed and lucid marketing approach will never overtake the tried and tested method involving attractive women generating improbable water effects whilst running along the beach - and I for one will attempt to run my XRT on vinegar if the girl in the ad is cute enough.)

For those wanting harder data, get your mates together and pull out those G-Techs.

Is it safe to run 95 in an edited car tuned to 98 when <3000rpm highway cruising? Went for a recent road trip and 98 was unavailable. I flashed my 95 tune in just to be safe but just wondering if it was actually neccessary?

Regular unleaded is sh!t. It's got a much higher sulphur content than premium. At worst if you use it fill every third time up with the good stuff.

It is only "safe" if you drive under very soft load. I've just driven over the Nullabor from East to West to have Simon (XFT) work his magic. I had a 98 tune in the F6 and could only get 95 at a couple of the servos. The very first overtake I did after filling up with 95 it pinged (requiring instant lift off of right foot) so from then on I kept the overtaking as a gentle strategic exercise rather than rapid tactical. So as I see it the options are:

1. Run your 95 tune, or

2. Take some octane booster with you, or

3. Be extremely gentle

After talking about just this topic with Simon today I must say don't ever run 91 in a car tuned for 98. A soft fart on the throttle will be enough for detonation.

Cheers,

Max
