guys ... the tranny (both manual and auto) will go off like a grenade if you "rush" more than 450Nm at them...

APS (and others) leave the shell shock of gear changes out with no boost below 3G but are saying that you get 550Nm up at 4.5G which is out of the gear changing danger zone ...

this is a little spookey and you have to accept that a tranny replacement may come (lowever unlikely that may be)

the thing that I see which amazes me is that the 400m trap speed of 179 kmh just represents truckloads of POWER .... maybe at higher rpms than a V8 but ... bucket loads of go ...

(as per article ... nearly M3 status)

if the transmission fails ... it would simply be a matter of tuning up the chip and letting the boost come on at lower rpms ..... better again and makes up for the cost of the tranny ...

but there is only so much power you can use .....

the thing for me is that I really like the handling balance of the XRT

the V8s are too front heavy (IMO) and unkind on centre corner speed ... this is where the stock XRT already shines ...

I'm excited :D :D :o

This may sound weird, but I kind of like the feeling of the other person taking off and thinking they have it in the bag because they get off the mark quicker ....... unfortunatlely they see me flying past seconds later and can't go with me (most times!!) :D

Is it more important for the car to perform better at the bottom end??

Or is it more important where you are placed after 400m??

Personal opinions will answer that one - I like to be in front with a higher speed!! :)

Like the idea of the chip ... don't like the idea of a new tranny - may be more cost effective than simply buying a faster car, but no good if you don't have a spare $8000 - $10,000 laying around ... :(

Who am I kidding ..... I would still take the risk!!! :):)

Sure I understand what you are saying but given the need for the turbo to spool up I have thought that this is one characteristic that was not going to change. Instead my driving has to plan gears to revs better. So that if I want to go somewhere I am in the 3,000 rev range.

Sixteen hundred bucks is a good price. Now do I need the extra performance?

Next silly question...

Maybe I need to get a life but this is some of the best news I've seen for a while. I've owned my XR6T for almost 6 months now and although I love it, I am getting used to the power AND WANT MORE !!! With regard to poor bottom end, I think a lot has to do with the way you drive it. Can't speak for the auto guys but with the right amount of throttle and good work with the clutch, I really don't feel that it is slow off the mark at all.

I will certainly be investigating this mod when it is available.

I almost went for the Capa kit and decided not to in the end, not much stuffing around with all the bits and pieces they include in there kit and for the high $5k to install.

I have been talking to another machanic in Sydney who does a lot APS system and advised me to be patient and wait. This new unichip with a nice exhaust should give low 13's all day not to bad for a daily driver.

My problem is I want to go faster, so I'm going to sit back and see what else APS will offer in the future and there is also Herrod to consider as well, should be an exciting next couple of months.

yeah I agree with Robbo....this thing is very quick off the mark if you know how to drive it that way...and no its not a simple matter of dumping the clutch at high revs and making the diff. /gearbox etc feel the brunt of the power...its a matter of balance and timing of the revs...this thing is not slow off the mark I can guarantee that....and if you consider it slow then 80% of the turbo cars I've raced (under controlled conditions) --->(skylines, vl turbos etc) are even slower off the mark than an xr6t ...

Cheers.

I think we all agree that APS has a quality product that will soon be available for us at a reletavely low price. However, I want to know if the auto boxes will cope with 295kw and 550nm. Ford has already limited the amount of torque this engine produces...

Not to mention the warranty implications.

I would assume you would all be looking at these upgrades post the 3yr warranty period?

Craig,

I dunno. It's something to think about. The price is right, but then there's warrenty issues, reliability, insurance...

I'd need to consider it carefully if I was going to do it within three years, as I don't really want to be doing a lot of stuffing around with the car if something happens to go wrong.

The cars got power now as it is... (but even then it's never enough!) :)

I think too that APS would not have modified many XR6T's (was it Chris who said APS were not making the upgrade available until late June?). I think people who get it done early may need to be prepared to work with the guys and iron out some problems that could potentially occur.

I've never had anything to do with APS, but from what I read and hear from people is they are about the best in the business when talking about performance upgrades for your car. But I reckon for me, it's going to cost a lot more than $1590 plus $600-$700 for a high-flow cat when you take into account the rise in insurance costs and maybe a new gearbox.
