$15 Sub Box For Premium Sound Sedans

Hi all,

For those of you that have a sedan with the premium sound option including 8" subwoofer - this may be the easiest, cheapest solution to getting some decent performance out of your sub.

I just changed over from the Mk1 sub to the JBL GTO sub and whilst it's performance is twice that of the standard sub, it's not a free to air sub. It needs an 8.5 litre sealed box to perform properly.

Now this solution may also work wonders for those of you that have MkII subs that 'pop' - this may be due to a lack of cone control. But for $100 - go and buy the JBL GTO sub anyway.

OK so - get down to Bunnings and buy yourself one of these black 9 litre drainage wells. They cost $9.90 and are made from a very sturdy thick plastic, even has reinforcement around it's edges. This is lightweight, won't flex under the pumping of the sub and is sooooooo cheap.

Next, take off the trim under your subs and speakers. It's held in place at the back with three white clips that you can squeeze together to take off. The front edge (behind the seats) is held in with two clips, just under a bit of trim.

Here's the trim removed - it just slides out the back.

Now place the sub box under your sub and hold it in place with something so you can line everything up.

It just misses the baby seat bolt at the front

Lines up perfectly with the rear of the parcel shelf and just seals against where the last bit of metal is before the cutout for the high-mount brake light

At this stage you can drill your pilot holes. Tow holes are pre-drilled in the sub box but I made a total of 4 holes (1 per side) so it holds well against the parcel shelf.

Now get yourself a roll of self-adhesive foam ($3). Remove the sub box and stick two rows of the adhesive foam around the top edge so it can seal real well against the parcel shelf.

Place the top of the sub box upside-down on the parcel shelf trim that you already removed from the car. Mark out the edge of the sub box in pen so you can cut out the hole

Now screw the sub box in place with 4x 8g 30mm self drilling screws and washers ($2.00)

Next, place the trim back into it's original position and over the sub box. Tidy it up a bit if you can be bothered after this 15 mins of hard work!!!

Now GO AND ENJOY YOUR MUSIC. TOTAL COST $15

In terms of results - this adds another 50-75% to the JBL subbie's output in my opinion. Remember - it's only an 8" sub driven by a weak amp. But it tightens up the bass considerably and I can crank the whole system up to 25 without distortion. (In a previous post I also replaced the factory 5 x 7's with some $100 JBL 5 x 7's.

The rear vision mirror is now shaking from the bass which is a considerable improvement from the factory sub. Not too much intrusion into boot space - I can still get fishing rods and so on into the boot with the seats down.

Did this mod today and all went well.

I have more bass and vibration through the seats now

Its a great cheap mod and I would recommend this to ppl with subs in their rear parcel shelf.

By adding an aftermarket Sub and Amp, u can defiantely get more quality bass as it will soundheaps better then the factory sub/amp.

I already have a JBL sub and Amp, so I didnt need to worry about this, but definately buy the 9L Water Drainiage box as this totally tops it up.

Try this mod out as it wont disappoint.
