December 17, 200520 yr #24 yeah mate mine makes the same sound when I start the car to back it out to wash and then turn it off again. It sounds like a bearing noise doesnt it and last for about 5-10 seconds.Dont panic.Just make sure if you give your car a boot load to run it down for a good minute otherwise bearings will run dry. <{POST_SNAPBACK}>This is true say for a track run,or private test track run,but for pottering around town, not needed...vik...a thermosyphon thing starts happening on shut down,to overcome this <{POST_SNAPBACK}>Vik! Are you feeling OK? You actually just posted useful information! <{POST_SNAPBACK}>Well I guess it is the silly season..... NOICE one Vikkyshazzy
December 17, 200520 yr #25 The turbo spins down for a lot longer than 5-10 seconds. When I blew the front pipe off my turbo, I was amazed to see the impellor still spinging for 5 MINUTES (yes you read that right!) after stopping the einge. The bearings they use, and the balance of the impellor, must be totally amazing for it to spin that long. I guess it doesnt surprise me too much, given they can spool up to 100,000rpm - where even theslightest imbalance will cause them to go nuclear. If you dont believe me, simply undo the front hose from the turbo and watch the impellor spin after you stop the engine. I know the sound you are talking about - I dont think its the turbo bearings.
December 19, 200520 yr #26 Just dont do any thing silly like stick your finger in, Ouch that's got to hurt Lol
December 19, 200520 yr #27 From wide open throttle, they will take a long time to stop, several minutes if they are in really good balance, from idle, with the hose off, mine is under 10 seconds. The thremo syphon of the coolant helps to cool the turbo, not lube it, the coolant will continue to syphon for a while, which helps the housing cool down, which in turn helps stop oil from being burned to the bearings and shafts etc, but it wont help lube it, ever.Alot of the noise you hear will be the air condioner gas "normalizing" in the system, when the car is running, a/c gas and liquid under very high pressure, car stopped, the gas continues to run around the lines where it will come to an even pressure, the hissing you hear is the gas going pst the TX valve in the A/C.Turn off the a/c for a minute or so before you stop your car, less noise, allthough you will hear the turno winding down for a little while from idle.this is why it is real important to run a Good turbo rates oil, changed at regular intervals, fresh oil has lees contaminants, (fuel, carbon etc) to be burned onto the really hot perts of an engine.
