Ok, since you ask I will throw my hat in the ring first...

To send an XR6T out with the knock sensors off requires the following attributes in a tuner -

1) Specifically tuning a large cammed 'noisy' aftermarket engine on race fuel for drag strip use

2) Making a mistake when tuning (turn off by accident)

3) Insanity

4) Lack of understanding of what they are doing or how an engine works

5) They run an engine rebuild shop as well and treat turning knock sensors off as a 'work creation scheme' for when the engine finally craps itself due to uncontrolled detonation  :stirthepot:

So cars tuned this way have a limited lifespan. What's the guy who has a tune like this going to do some time down the track if the engine fails? If he doesn't know his engine is tuned with knock sensors disabled is it his fault? What does he do?Does the tuner take responsibility? If the customer asks for knock disabled, fair enough I suppose

HAHAH.

This is a cack.. ok, I'll bite..

So Tuner, if your not the right person to ask, why feel compelled to post up an answer a mere 3 minutes after it was posted?? Quick to sink the boot, or just helping out??

Mr X, you managed to avoid asking my question, and turn the subject back onto someone who has an idea.. Do you feel like answering the question? You don't have to..  Did you ask the same questions to your chosen tuner, with the chosen product???? You seem like a well informed gent, don't tell me this only crossed your mind in the last 30 mins or so???

Now, If hundreds ( ?? ) of ppl are happy with knock disabled tunes, did they ask if it was disabled?? Did they know it existed?? Did you ask hundreds of ppl?? Can you tell if it's enabled?? Did the tuner tune to safe paramaters as to not have to worry about knocking ( pinking ) ?? ( bad move, doesn't allow for a crap dose of fuel imo..... ) Did you personally ask your tuner??

Yes I asked both of my tuners about Knock sensors. Nick even showed me all of his tables. Yes I have asked Simon previously about Knock sensors. Yes I knew it existed, I researched the product before letting someone loose on my engine. No I didn't ask hundreds of ppl if they were happy, I don't give a stuff what they do to their engines, and everyones goals are different.

:)

We're all not as brilliantly erudite as you f6.some guys are just regular Joe's off the street who need a little information to work from-the whole point of this thread. What should a prospective buyer be asking.I gather you think knock sensors disabled is okay for Joe Public

Street tuner...

Surely you would TUNE the car with the knock sensors off or with zero adjustment to ensure there is no knock without any of the ECU's capacity to retard timing for knock control active.

Then enable the knock control when the car is released in the knowledge that the car should not knock under normal circumstances, without need any of the available timing adjustment.

I would have thought that this was the best way to ensure that the knock control does have the maximum available adjustment to cope with poor fuel or any other circumstance by which knock might occur, to protect the engine.

In other words TUNE with knock off...

Drive away with knock on...

Just my 2 c...

Cheers,

Ben. :msm:

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Do Unichip tuners have control over turning knock sensors on/off??

What happens if a Unichip tuner sends an engine out pinging?? Will it self destruct?? or can they protect it to the extent of an edit tuner??

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

You think he will answer that?

It would appear that this is a fairly easy thing to grasp. What if any are the disadvantages of leaving the knock controll on? I believe the answer to this would be, none. What are the advantages of turn it off? Not sure but if there arnt any disavantages with it left on then leave it on then. Turning it off seems a backwards move.

Secondly this product has been introduced into Australia in large numbers with a hugh back up from the U.S. There have been training corses held, there are instruction manuals printed. Surely there must be a fairly simple black and white answer to this question. WHATS GOING ON were peolpe asleep while this was being taught. I find it hard to believe that such an important subject was missed.

Actually someone did fall asleep during the training. No names though!

As an aside I monitor the knock sensors while I tune, and get them to read zero activity during my power runs. I also tune most street driven Ts on 95 octane fuel to ensure the lowest common denominator. That way, it really doesnt matter what fuel they run on the street, the car wont ping. Simple as that.

It's only a guess, but Street Tuner mentioned he tunes with them off, then turns them on for safety once the car is done. Good practice. If Unichip has no signal bending over knock sensors, one can only assume they ( APS or outlets ) tune with the factory ones in-palce and they stay that way.

I 'spose this means Unichip might have an inbuilt safety marging, and might be well suited to high HP tuning, or engines that are 'hard tuned'.. At least you know if your car leaves a good APS tuner, it's guaranteed to be 100% regardless of fuel, temp or whatever???????

I might dig up the search button, I seem to remember something like this was asked previously.
