Possible Problem?

alright heres how things are, before calling the dealer I thought I should come ask you guys as you will probably know whats up with the thing, I took her out today with a couple mates, thought id give it some, hit 60 still in 1st when all of a sudden my revs kept goin up but my speed wasnt, I changed into 2nd and same thing, all of a sudden I hear a pop kind of sound and she bit in again and soon an awful smell came through the vents

I take it you have a manual ?

If so you have spun the clutch, it should be ok. Its sorta like when you spin the tyres, they have not much grip when you drop the clutch, but have heaps if you ease the clutch and then boot it

I tink you has a combination of the spun clutch and the rev limiter.

I would not worry about it, if the car feels ok now, you should be right.

yeh she feels fine, havent noticed any loss in performance although I have been taking it fairly easy since it happened, I dont think I hit the rev limiter as the revs went only to 4,000rpm roughly when I was in 2nd and from what ive read I wouldve noticed if I hit it

sure? its a mk2 6-spd, it can go up to 70kms and that's at 5500rpm and never had a problem before

Mk2's will do near 75kmh in 1st, depending on when the rev limiter decides to kick in.

From what you say, I would suggest the following:

1) Some kind of torque limiter tags kicked in. If this is true, dont worry....nothing bad has happened. Its just the computer thinking it needs to kick in and play with the engine to protect the drive train.

2) I think most likely you have popped the pipe off your turbo output. Most people here have done it at least once! I did it within a few days of getting my car and thought I had damaged it. The smell was a small oil breather tube that got knocked off by the turbo output pipe and dumped a little oil on the exhaust. The car still had a fair bit of power and drove ok (a little weird at times) as it still has nearly 180kW without the turbo.

If its #2, its not a problem as you can put it back on with a screw driver or pop past a Ford dealer and they will likely put it back on for you in 5 mins.

Whilst your symptoms do sound a little different from the typical #2, you never know.

Try lifting your bonnet and following the big black pipes down from the top center of the engine to the left side. one of them plugs into the front of the turbo. Give it a wiggle - does it move much and is it solidly connected to the turbo? If not, it needs to be reattached which just involves a screw driver and a wiggle!

thanks for that mate, initial thought when I sat there was clutch problem, when I heard the pop I thought turbo, had a quick look at my mates place to see if the hoses were still connected, ill head out tomorow morning and check if they are loose

ok, went out this morning, checked all the hoses, everything is tight with no movement around the connections, it mustve been either the clutch spinning or the torque tag, thanks fellas for helping, thanks a load off my mind

I will bet my left nut that it was the clutch slipping. I tried to tell my dealer this and their response was pretty much that I'm not driving the car properly. They are no longer my dealer!

Yeh its the clutch. He said the revs were going up and the car wasn't accelerating and there was a bad smell (clutch). Torque tags just limit torque through limiting power output (not allowing to rev fast, but car still being able to accelerating)
