I would think this is a warranty item.

It would be possible to break them by either dropping or cross threadding, but I guess heat could be a factor.

I would just play dumb and get Ford to sort it out. any bits of plastic should be caught by the oil pump strainer before it does any engine damage. These bits would also be removed when the oil is changed.

is it possible the under bonnet heating is getting to much for the faithfull oil cap?

No doubts that that is the culprit

must have been because it dont take much force to screwing in a cap, and for it to break... ?

It's easy to break them ...........l was just wiping the top and it fell off  Lucky at that time l was at Ford and they replaced it straight away, also they took off the rocket cover and found bits inside

I broke mine while undoing it, I managed to get all of it out...I think. I had around 25000km on it when this happened, I rang ford and asked whats the f*#king go with the caps and they said it was probably caused from overtightening. It wasnt expensive which surprised me

I've had this problem on past Fords, all I6's - Its just the sh*t plastic and the massive heat they are subjected too.

Moreal of the story? Don't change your oil  or keep a spare handy.

Not expensive ? Probably means they expect them to need replacing..
