Have we seen this yet?

XR6 Turbo for a week

Got one of those sitting in the driveway as I write this. Had it 24 hours, and to put it bluntly the car is extremely impressive. Dyno testing has shown an initial 184rwkw (on the same rollers my stock SS made 177rwkw), but the power gain at 3000rpm over the LS1 is more like 20kw, and 30Nm of torque.

Removing the airbox restriction gave 204rwkw and another big torque peak, while getting rid of the exhaust (todays exercise) should hopefully see us near 215 - 220rwkw. The impression on the road is of a monster cube engine, with huge acceleration on tap by keeping the tacho between 2000 and 4000rpm. Its a refreshing drive.

While the engine is the jewel of the package, the general dynamics and finish of the car are also up to standard. One driver, who owns a 300 GTS took it on his test track stretch of road and noted that with both cars in stock form the Coon would outpoint his HSV, and destroy an SS. that's not bad coming from a guy that was hesitant to be seen in a Ford.

Good to see, huh?

Removing the airbox gained 20KW at the wheels? What happened to all of those rumours about the EMS jumping in and killing any power hikes?

Someone better get Sherlock onto that and investigate further, sounds like a quick and simple mod that's easily reversable if required :) Is there any data keeping feature in the EMS that could track this sort of thing?

I read that thread earlier. Its got me very curious.

Been hoping to catch up with Martin (author of that thread) tonight to ask him a few q's... but he hasnt been around.

For those of you who dont know - Martin is the Technical editor of Zoom, Street commodores, and Hot 4s (or some 4 magazine...) so he definatly knows his stuff!!!

Keep us posted - maybe I will need to get an Auto after all if power gains are going to be that easy!

Dynochart of the torque and power curves would be handy too if you're able to get more info :D

Went for a cruise last night with the LS1 fraternity - in the stock XR6 - and made some interesting comparison regarding the performance of the turbocharged engine. First and foremost from a standing start the XR6, if you feed it out at 2200rpm, will match or beat any of them, save for Brute, whose trick trans and 240rwkw in a VU, gives him an upper hand.

Roll ons though are a different story, and even full exhaust cars cant stick with the XR6 from 75km/h or so to - !!!!. The trick with the Ford is to start the roll on at 2700rpm in 3rd gear, while the GenIII is at, say, 4900rpm in 2nd. The Ford will stay nose ahead, or level, till the Gen III runs out of revs, where it will fall back on the change, with a good length or two advantage being taken, and held due to the Fords monstrous, and very flat, torque curve. A manual VU with HSV system and gears experienced this effect three times back to back.

Just an observation, but what I can tell you though is that the local LS1 brigade now have a much healthier respect for the XR6 turbo product. Which, of course, is a good thing, as its not a bad car.
