Favourite Drives

How about we use this thread to post our favourite bits of road, the ones you go to just to enjoy a drive.

That way, hopefully we can share some info on some of the best pieces of road on offer, and find out about some you didnt know were there.

Nothing better than getting out and just driving the car, not worrying about the problems you may be having with it, but just enjoying it for what it is.

For me, my loop starts at Albion Park just south of Wollongong.

Out along the Illawarra Highway to Macquarie Pass, a pearler of a hillclimb. 6Km of 2nd and 3rd gear, heaps of corners with a few hairpins. Fairly good surface too. Just watch out for trucks and bikes.

Once at the top, head past the Pie Shop (or stop if your hungry) and keep going through Robertson. About 2Kms past Robertson, turn left onto the back road to Fitzroy Falls. Folow this on for about 20kms.

At the T intersection, turn left. This takes you down Barrengarry Mtn into Kangaroo Valley. This one will test your stoppers. If they arent smoking, you werent trying!

Head through Kangaroo Valley, then up and over Cambewarra Mtn. Once again, a nice twisty hillclimb, followed by an equally twisty descent. This will take you back to the Princes Hwy at Bombaderry (Nowra), where you can head home.

All up take about 2 hours. Love that loop on my bike also.

Most of it was good, that road up nory coming into Lauceston where DucattiJB, Ken and Capn' Cash left all the nancies behind was a pealer

I've been working on a little project to document the roads of Tasmania (being an ex-pat 'wegian myself...)

Maybe if I threw up a webpage where people could submit their reviews of particular roads, and I could then publish that in this kind of format (PDF for sample portability):

We could extend this for all states and roads. Could be good, and get us some great exposure.

The best and closest bit of hillclimb is probably the Clyde Mountain, bit twisty, but nowhere as twisty as Macquarie.

Here in the ACT, I like to do my local loop, starts at Duffy in the Weston Creek, you head towards the Cotter, and take the back road towards Tidbinbilla. It finishes at Tharwa, only bout 10 mins from my house. Not twisty, but still a good bit of road. Good for stretching the legs!

Mine starts at Albion park and heads up maqurie pass and past the pie shop keep following it along for 20km or so and take the Bundanoon turn off , this will lead you along some twisty bits to tallong and finally onto the hume just before goulburn.

Follow that through and turn left onto Braidwood Rd and keep going all the way through to the Kings hwy till you get to Batemans Bay . Its a good mix of fast open twisty bits and tight corners with some good straights, hill climbs and decents.

Then you can come home through the coast rd to Nowra and then over Cambawarra Mountain to Kangaroo valley and back through fiztroy falls , then down Maquarie pass back home. Its a long drive about 500km but heaps of fun.

My Favourite would have to be the Snowy Mountains Highway from Tumut to Cooma. Bit of a mix of twisties and hillclimb through Talbingo, then a leg stretcher Past Kiandra and Mt Selwyn, then a bit of a sprint with long sweepers back down into Cooma.

Apart from any drive in the Adelaide Hills where I live...best drive I've had would be from Omeo to Mt Hotham.....top of Australia, nice road with nice bends...this was done in Summer....not quite sure about taking "the girl" up there in winter.
