I found alot of rubber shavings at the front of the engine around the pulleys etc. I inspected the belt and found a thin layer of rubber on top of the belt was missing!

On closer inspection, sure enough the metal pipe just on top of the belt (to the left of the engine) was touching it and hence shaving the belt. Luckily there happened to be a clip (to pull the metal pipe away from the belt) but somehow was at positioned far away to the right which allowed the metal pipe to sag down and touch the belt. So I moved the clip to the left and problem fixed!

Here is a pic of the problem and fix. Hope it helps.

There should be two clips there guys. One at either end.

Mine have both come loose on the pipework and disappeared.

I have noticed, however, that both pipes are quite firm and don't seem to move at all with plenty of clearance to the belt.

It may be worth checking the mounting ends of the pipes for security.

Good point. Check the mounting also. Looks like these plastic clips come off easily. I better keep a metal coat hanger wire handy in the boot just in case this remaining clip falls off between now and the next service.

There has been a few reports of this happening. Hasn't done it on mine yet though.
