12/02/04 09:32 PM12/02/04 09:32 PM #1 G'day, just found this forum today - great to see that it is active. I'm presently driving a 944 Turbo as a daily driver/track car here in the US and am considering what to get car wise in Australia when I get back there (April). I will be bringing the 944 back with me to Adelaide but can't register it there as a daily driver. Ideally I should get something like a Nissan Patrol to tow my 944 to the track since I it would mean I can tow the car as well as take parts and all the othertrack stuff but I am sure as hell liking the 6cyl, 4 valve 4 ltr potential of the XR6T. I see that in manual it is only rated to 1200kg towing so if I did get an XR6T it would probably have to be an auto for 1600kg tow capacity.Anyone done any towing and have any comments ?Anyone tracked their auto xr6T ? - this is one of the main things I am curious about. New auto transmissions (Porsches anyway) are supposed to be just as good on the track but damn I am having a hard time convincing myself about that.
12/02/04 09:45 PM12/02/04 09:45 PM #2 oz951,Mate.. I have an Auto XR6T. I have towed a caravan around Australia (the van was around 1500kg loaded. During the trip I encountered the extreems of the Australian outback (46 deg head wind etc) with no problems at all. The Auto cars come with a finned auto trans cooler as standard. THe engine temp raised to about half but that was it. The performance of the car while towing is still fantastic. Just excelerate to pass the road trains and off she went. While towing I mainly sat on 90-95k/h. On the complete trip of 20,000km I averaged 16l/100K (fairly flat roads). I have not run mine on the track so cane comment re the auto and track work. The manual shift on the auto is good but not as good as a manual for track work I would guess. How hevey is the 944?? The XR8 auto is limited to 2300kg so with all your tools, trailer, car etc it may be over the 1600KG, although I am guessing that there is safety margin in the 1600KG limit on the Turbo. I would not like to try too many runs up the adelaide hills though..my 2cents worth.
12/02/04 10:47 PM12/02/04 10:47 PM #3 bdennis, Thanks for the feedback, sounds like your pretty happy with how it all went on that long tow. My 944 is not stripped bare since it is still a road car (here anyway) so it weighs in at 1350kg. I could see towing the car to WA at some point but mostly will be out to Mallalla I guess.Looks like I will have to arrange a xr6T test drive when I get back.

13/02/04 05:56 AM13/02/04 05:56 AM #7 oz, the XR8 can tow more than the XR6 turbo as far as I know.I know that bdennis towed a caravan around australia recently with his turbo.

I could see towing the car to WA at some point but mostly will be out to Mallalla I guess. That only leaves about 250Kg for the car trailer (+ tools) for an auto T. Not sure how much they weigh - insurance companies are starting to get strict on this (use as an excuse).I have no probs towing a 1500kg boat and trailer combination (boat trailer is 475kg I think)
13/02/04 09:09 AM13/02/04 09:09 AM #9 oz951,see you at Mallalla... if not on the roads here first;I aint got the folding stuff you seem to,but I used to take my old 1970 XY futura to Mallalla, took the T last month..Talk about chalk and cheese, and 34 years difference.I think youll be happy with your test drive.vik
