In answer to your question I think you will find it is because the windows on hatches wagons and vans are at the rear of the vehicle and any road grime and mud picked up off the road is splattered onto the rear window and makes it dirty and wet, whereas the airflow over a sedan stops this from occurring and the only time the rear window in a moving sedan gets wet is when the rain flows up the windscreen over the roof and down the window.Where as the one in a van gets wet as soon as you drive in the rain.Some sedans had rear window wipers eg Gallant VR4 on the top of the range model but not on the others, a bit of a wank.
