My FG's done about 70K now and I've started noticing metalic noise from the front left when cold (just rolling) and louder noise when turning a RH corner slowly. At first though it was a tyre, but now thinking it's sounding like a noisy bearling. Doesn't happen all the time. Front end drives fine and tyre ware is good. Has anyone out there had bearing problems and how much to fix? Can they be repacked with grease? I haven't had to replace a wheel bearing in decades!. Cheers.

not a very common problem on the FG's, but they are a complete hub assembly so you can not re-pack them :spoton:

I did a front wheel hub assembly on my BF...it can be done yourself if you're keen...genuine hubs are around $180 from Ford...there is a seller on ebay selling genuine ones for around $80 plus $15 postage.

I also bought the retaining nut, that holds the hub onto the spindle...

From memory I think the torque spec on that nut is around 280 - 300nm.

I let mine go for a bit and it progressively got worse...would get loud when doing a left hand turn and the lateral load was on the drivers side...

My FG also has a reasonable amount of tyre noise...so it could be your tyres....(mine are just the standard dunlops)

Would also suggest that you check your wheel nuts, and make sure they aren't loose...as this can create noise as the car is driving as the rotor wobbles against the pads...

My FG cops a flogging at the circuit and I'm onto my 4th set of front wheel bearings.

See post #58 in my Wheels and Tyres "275's all round" thread and you'll know why. :)

Senna is correct. They are a sealed unit with ABS and you can't just re pack the bearings.

The cheaper ebay ones aren't worth it. The Ford (SKF) ones last a lot longer.

There is an engineer in Sydney (Bosnjak) currently making some stronger ones for V8 brute ute driving.

Thanks guys. I thought it was tyres for a while, but you can certainly hear a mechanical noise when it's cold. I'll get Ford to check and change it at the next service. If it's $180 + fitting, it's probably not worth the effort on my part. Cheers

When changing the bearings on the front of a BF, do you need any special tools and do you need to replace the bearing nut at the same time or can you use the existing one???

Yeah definitely 300Nm for the BF. I watched Sean at XFT do mine up on the fronts over 100,000km ago. Booked in next week to have them done again. I have a bad habit of hitting sweeping left hander on/off ramps as fast as the tyres wil let me. I'd have worn out the left side as well by now but there just aren't as many sweeping right handers!
