Newby Needs Help

Hi guys.

I'm not only new to these forums but am very much a car newbie. I didn't really have an interest in cars at all until I bought my first XR6 about a year ago (a 2004 Falcon BA).

I recently (as in, one week ago) upgraded to a 2005 XR6 MkII Turbo and would like some advice on what exactly you think should be modified under the hood.

As such, the car is pretty much stock everything apart from the wheels that I bought the day after buying it (not a fan of the stock ford wheels).

The main thing I'm looking to improve is, of course, performance and if anyone has any tips to improve the fuel economy that would also be appreciated.

Hi Matt.

Welcome to the forums.

First things first, where abouts are you located? This will be crucial in us steering you towards a good trustworthy tuner. You can buy all sorts of gear off eBay and the like, but these may do more harm than good.

If you can work hand in hand with a trustworthy tuner, your road to modding will be a very enjoyable one.

Was the BA XR6 your first car? If so you should be impressed with the performance you already have from the Mk2 T. How are you gauging your T's performance?

I'm from Port Macquarie and one of my best mates is a mechanic and service advisor at a big local car dealership. He has given me many tips and is going to fit any new parts for me.

My first car was a real sh*tbox Holden, followed by a similar Ford wagon, then I bought the XR6.

So far, I can't really tell too much of a difference between the XR6 and XR6 turbo, however have found the turbo to be a bit more powerful as I expected.

In terms of look modifications such as colouring etc I'm comfortable with what I have planned.

Hey Matt welcome bud!

In your situation the only safe mods you can do is a cat back system and a k&n panel filter any other mods

Your car will have to be tuned because it will over boost then go ka boom witch you don't want to happen

Like ms700 said a good tuner witch there is a chit load in Sydney will work with you to what ever power levels you

Want but be careful because there is a lot of sharks out there !!!

If you can not feel much difference between the xr6 and the t I suggest you find out what's wrong with the turbo first. It probably needs servicing and repairs. Once it is running right you may not want mods for now.

^^ this. If you can't feel much of a difference then something isn't right. Depending on kms (im going to assume well over 100,000 given 05) give it a good service including plugs, oil, filter, fuel filter etc. There's also a few things you can check such as the boost solenoid (give it a clean - theres a tutorial on here somewhere) also check the bolts to your turbo, dump pipe and manifolds to make sure they're all on good and check your cooler pipes are all still good.

Then have a look around at some threads and get an idea of what you may be aiming for and head to a reputable tuner to suggest what parts they say will get you there

I'd keep the mods relatively minor for now. Maybe a tune, high flow cat, K&N filter and some Deka 60 fuel injectors. Probably set you back $2-$2.5k + flash tuner.

Beware buying through eBay as there are a lot of scam artists out there that will be happy to hustle you.

Is it a manual or an automatic?
