A quick search on eBay shows that 1/2-20 taps are available. So why is dags refering to unobtanium?

Am I seeking to fulfil an impossible task or what?

I think dags thought you were going to try and make a 1/2 - 20 knob fit on a 10 -1.5 shifter

The root of a 10 x 1.5 thread should be 8.55mm, drill this out to 11.5mm and then you can tap your new thread. As long as there is enough meat you will be fine.

I thought he was going to try thread cutting the shifter stalk..hence using a die not a tap....
