As in, if I buy an XR6T second hand from grandpa jones, how long wiill it take to retrain it?

If that was the case all you do is disconnect the battery for about 2 minutes then take it for a flog and show it who's boss.But to answer your question correctly,you would just drive it as you see fit for about 16 - 20km and from then on it will monitor your driving style and make subtle little changes from then on.

Is it just the transmission shift programming we are talking about here or is there more to it than that?

Also, is the performance auto mode (stick to the left) also adaptive?

No it's not just the trans shift programing that is monitored and changed.Remember your instrument cluster accesses the fuel mapping info from the PCM to adjust your DTE and you would have noticed this changes quite frequently.So the PCM is constantly adapting to your driving style frequently.

The performance auto mode references the same set of look up tables in the PCM that all the other shift modes use so yes it is.

But why would Krash experience "freeing up" of the engine at 10k if this was the reason? Wouldn't he have had the engine Adapt to his style at 16-20klm?

........The PCM in these vehicles doesnt care if it has done 10km or 10,000km and there is no hidden agenda programmed into them for such a thing.They do however adapt themselves to your driving style.It sounds to me that your car is getting use to your driving style.Enjoy.

not sure I actually appreciate the T's electronics adapting to my daily average/boring commuter run driving style and then, from whats being said here, having to thrash the thing for 20km to re-teach it to perform optimally, performance wise (or disconnect the battery every day!)

or am I misinterpreting whats being said here?

perhaps there is a way of disabling the computers learning abilities if this is effectively de-tuning the car

Needs a reset switch, so it forgets everything it has learnt.

Would have the same effect on the car as disconnecting the battery.

I get that affect by getting on the shiraz for a weekend.

Guys as FORDTECH stated it only takes a 16-20km before the car starts adjusting values. It's not really that long before things start to change. And like he said the PCM is making subtle changes to these values so chances are you won't even notice it.
