1. Link re GM's profits

2. If you think ANY car company in the world is currently run by any sort of 'purist' you are kidding yourself

I have a client who has just set up the first few Australian branches of a franchise chain that is MASSIVE in Asia and his first comments are that "employees in Australia get paid way too effing much and have so many rights". Quite simply we are (a combination of all these things) too far away from everyone else (notwithstanding relative proximity to Asia compared to the US), too expensive to pay to do stuff and made up of far too few consumers to be relevant on a global scale

That's socialism for you...wonderful isn't it. Why reward hard work when you can reward every fcker and remove all incentives!

Ah the old adage you get what you pay for... We deal with chery (not for much longer) their build quality is sh*t warranty isnt worth the paper its written on, they rust before delivery could go on forever they are built on a budget by cheap labour where as fords build quality locally has moved forward in leaps and bounds and they are built in high tech factories whos workers are paid well (usually) and are skilled at what they do.... I know which country id rather live in and which car id rather spend my hard earned on

And then there's the old theory of maintaining manufacturing jobs in-case they are required for future war efforts. Which although it seems a bit far fetched it does have merit.

If a war starts we won't have any tyres so the car problem won't be relevant :longlaugh:

Why would you need car tyres for a war? I guess it's meant in terms of building aircraft/tanks/ships etc.

Wouldnt a better plan be subsidised purchases for choosing a Holden,Tax Payer Funded ?

So,if I wanted a SV6,I could purchase it for $29,500 after the Rebate ?

Let the Market decide ?

Free trade agreements forbid it, same for import tariffs designed to sway purchasing decisions.

I would have thought that building a car in Europe (to reasonable standards) would be more costly than building them here. They are even more hanstring by conditions of work etc. But Focus and Fiesta are world cars and sold in many countries. Falcon isn't. It's almost boutique from that standpoint. Aut and NZ are the only current markets for it.
