Bigger Battery To Handle System

Hey guys,

iv just done a upgrade on my system and have been told by my installer I need a bigger battery to supply more juice.

I want to know exactly what I should be looking for, why I need it, and what the differences are between your normal and bigger batteries.

just buy a optima, fully sealed, much higher cca and 5year warranty..and best of all, same size

I have the Optima blue to marine cos it has the extra terminals.

(I run a lot of radio gear with 7 transmitters in the boot. Not all transmitting at the same time but they're all on and receiving with at leat 2 transmitting)

How about, a bigger alternator... that's where the power comes from when the car is started...

If you have a 90ampere an hour alternator, with a 1000watt system ( P / V = I ( 1000watt / 12V = 83.33 amps an hour ) )

Now if you get a bigger battery, you still have a 12V power supply so you're still going to be drawing a large amount of amperes through an alternator that's almost at it's peak..

now add your head lights, wipers, spark, fuel pump and what ever else runs in the car, You've just overloaded and burnt out your alternator.

A battery is only really there to start the car and run the acc when the car is off. A bigger battery will only let you play music longer when the car is off.

Trouble is the smart charge system will throttle the alternator back anyway, bloody electronics

I know of taxi drivers who have a charger hard wired in and plug the car in to charge at the end of each shift as the lights, cb etc drain the batt faster than it charges.

TXR05 is right. Bigger batt wont help here. Once the car is running the alternator supplies the power and chargers the batt back up. If changing the alternator is not an option you can try adding capacitors.
