mmmmmmm 1 extra point for all those who don't need them.... what about really rewarding them with a free license ....or cheaper rego..Giving something to someone who is not going to need it anyway...Like me offering free strap ons to forums members..Well maybe not quite like that, as most of you wouldn't mind owning 2 of them.. I guess

Jeezz. Why not go the whole hog, be realy generous and give everyone unlimited points. Sure to be a vote winner for the unwary sheep among us.

That way there will always be the max number of drivers on the road to collect revenue from.

They aren't contributing while being suspended after all!

Drivers claim victory in demerit points shake-up

Alexandra Smith

November 29, 2010

DRIVERS beware. Cranking up your car stereo could cost you $150 and two demerit points but failing to use your indicator properly or driving the wrong direction at a roundabout will not cost you a single point.

A noisy engine that blows too much smoke could also leave you with a $258 fine and three demerit points but driving in a bus lane will now cost you only one demerit point.

The government last week increased the number of demerit points on an unrestricted licence from 12 to 13 and cut points on 22 road offences, ranging from sticking to the right lane when the speed limit is more than 80km/h to driving down the middle of the road on a two-way street.

They also scrapped demerit points for several indicator offences, including using blinkers ''contrary to permitted use''.

The changes were billed by the government as a big win for drivers after lobbying from the motoring group NRMA, but it is understood they were not discussed with police or the Road and Traffic Authority's Centre for Road Safety.

A spokesman for the Roads Minister, David Borger, said a minute was prepared for cabinet after consultation with senior RTA officers and some proposals were modified following those talks.

''The RTA was advised in September that the Minister for Roads was considering demerit points reform. This was before the NRMA call for action,'' the spokesman said.

2 points for playing your stereo too loud... while they've got those "party buses" that make the ground shake with the music they play.
