I was thinking the other day about my transmission and hows its annoying as its gonna keep me under the 300rwkw mark unless I wanna kill it and I was wondering to myself why is the 5 speed manual box in the ba xr6 turbos so weak?

Like I know of lots of other cars running 5spd manual boxes with over 300rwkw and you dont hear of them being warned about the 5spd not being strong enough and one of my good mates 01 subaru wrx sti is running 220atw and that's got a 5spd manual in it.

Im sure there is a reason why because surely the quality of fords T5 box cant be that much worse than many of the other car manufactures.

Old gearbox that was never designed to take huge amounts of torque ... pretty sure it's basically the same box that was introduced with the EA falcon, maybe even earlier when they were first available in he XE.

Not really a sh*tty effort at all...box can handle the power ford tuned the stock engine to in most cases ... manufactures don't design cars to be modified, they design them to a price point.

The gearbox was upgraded to the 6speed when the Typhoon was released, and in turn when they upped the torque in the BF...

The gear box is rated to something like 480 nm of torque stock ba xr6t is 450nm so it handles it fine but once you start modding you go well over 480nm.

Ford realised there mistake and upgraded it on BA MKII not BF.

Strength in gearboxes is determined by;

(probably in this order).......

-gear material (8620 etc)

-shaft spacing (determines gear size....larger gears have more metal/teeth in mesh with each other, hence stronger)

-gear width (some Jap gearboxes have good shaft spacing, but the gears are not wide enough)

-helix angle of gears

-bearing size and support for shafts

-lubrication efficiency of box components

ohk pretty sh*t effort by ford there on that one, sucks for me because I really just did not have the extra money for the 6spd and I had no interest in driving an auto

Live an learn. I bought a BA T5 and sold it cause it was a waste of money, ZF all the way next time.

other cars with pretty much same box run more power because the obviously dont produce the torque these high powered falcons put out, its not the power that kills them its the torque
