The (ignition module) is an Autronic 500 R CDI unit.

These are very good CDI units, I have been using them for many years.

These units when wired in high power mode, pump 500 volts into the coil primary, instead of the usual 12 - 14 volts supplied by the standard ignition circuit.

Without getting to indepth with the workings, in a nut shell it produces massive secondary coil output (spark energy).

I dont know anything about these Ignition X coils, so,

You need to make sure there is no diode in the coil primary circuit (standard coils do not have one)so I would imagine these dont either. (I am not referring to an ignitor circuit here, just a diode).

Are these coils true "INDUCTIVE COILS" (stadard coils are not).

If these are not INDUCTIVE COILS they WILL have to be wired REVERSE POLARITY to work properly.

The serial number on the CDI 500R should end with a "HF", if not it is an older unit.

"HF" series CDI 500R's can be programmed through the SM4 to output single fire or multi spark fire modes via the dwell table.

I always install CDI units on all set ups I do, boosted applications. (supercharged/turbocharged).

Improved : starting,throttle response,power output,torque,ability to run richer fuel curve with minimal plug fouling,can run wider plug gaps with higher boost,etc,etc.

Your mechanic should know all of these things anyway if he knows his stuff.

The SM4 Autronic is a very sophisticated piece of equipment capable of just about anything anyone could want.

Autronic software is very complex and powerfull, especially in SM4 VERSION 1.09 applications.

With the correct installation procedure,coupled with an experienced Autronic tuner you should have no issues.

I also rate the ViPEC ecu's right up there with the best of them also (Autronic,Motec).

Just my opinion based on experience.

thanks for that ill definately bring these points up with him, but I really do trust him as a tuner, the cdi unit is brand new, so hopefully the newest model, I will check this also. the autronic I bought 2nd hand but it was sent away to have the software upgraded to the latest version...the weapon x coils are supposed to be an upgraded, plug and play replacement for standard coils (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/XR6-Turbo-F6-High-Performance-Weapon-X-Ignition-Coils_W0QQitemZ250557663754QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_Car_Parts_Accessories?hash=item3a56668a0a) cheers for the info, im going to do a bit of reading now as this theory on electronics is a very grey area for me!

The SM4 would have had an earlier chip version EG: 1.O7, They would have sent it to be upgraded with the latest 1.09 chip.

Heaps more functions and ability.

Also has a handy Scope function to check crank triggers etc.

Its a simple procedure, remove old chip from socket and fit new one with special anti fretting and anti corrosive grease.

Takes approx 5 minutes to do.

hey mate, ive got another question for your wisdom haha...they have replaced the throttlebody with an au xr8 throttle, is there a good billet replacement the same size that's available? whats the size of the standard? they said the au one is 2mm smaller in diameter which is no good...

I used the DBW twin throttle body supplied with the Harrop Supercharger kit on the XR8.

As for aftermarket throttle bodies, there are many brands out there,as for a direct bolt on replacement and throttle cable arrangement I do not know of any brands at the minute.

I havent looked into any of this yet.

Best bet would be to source TBA or someone like that that does custom throttle bodies.

I am sure there would be companies making them.Previously I have used Holley,Edelbrock,but nothing on XR6T before.

ok thanks mate, I have decided on a plazmaman t/b 85mm. they are making a custom one with the right flange, and the piping will need to be tapered up, and the plenum ported..so its a bit more last minute work, but will be much better than the old au peice of crap..
