I use my 22-250 as a everything gun, but I want the .338 behind the seat for that once ina blue moon "sh*t I wish I had a long-range gun" for those 300+ metre shots... their capable of 700m.

Yeah fair call. Love a good long range shot myself. There is so much more skill involved in tagging something at those distances.

Its gunna be fitted with a bipod and more than likely a Bushnell 2.5-20x42mm scope, im yet to find a scope with such a small min zoom for such a large max zoom. Either way ill be buying the scope from the states, the aussie importer "NIOA" slap so much extra on top of the american price its not funny, for eg: I had my eye on a Weaver 4.5-16x40 here in aus for $810.. shopped around a bit, $340 US dollars landed to my door.

Hmm, interesting point... I buy heaps of stuff off the net for my other toys but I had never really thought about it for a scope. I just had a look then for a comparison.

Found heaps of places wanting $750+ AUD (this is gun shops and aussie sites on the net)

Got offered one from a local gun shop to go on my .270 for $530 AUD (I thought that was fairly good)

Just looked at a few american sites. Can have it on my door for < $450AUD. When you consider it is (nearly) half price buying the exact same thing from the states it makes me wonder why I would even bother getting one from here.....

so yer basically it wont get used alot, but hey ive got all my life to go for a trip upto darwin or wherever hunting, it'll come in handy one day! Till then she's just gunna be "my baby"!

I've got family up in Darwin so I want to see if they know any places/people that go out hunting up there and see if I can gee myself up a trip. Might take the .17 HMR for use on some of those scrub bulls....

why would you want a 50mm scope for such a small zoom?? field of view isnt really any different in the 40-42mm scopes.

I figure, the smaller the diameter the scope, the less it gets knocked about in the ute, the more accurate it stays for longer.

I've always gone on the theory that - the bigger the field of view, the easier it is to look through and therefore use accurately. No point straining your eyes looking through a little hole just to see anything. I've always chosen whichever min/maz zoom I want and then the biggest 'FOV' I can get for that particular zoom - just the way I was taught.

Same reason you buy a 50" TV over a 42"....

I've got a .223, .270 and .22... I use the .223 on 99% of shoots, as it's just a good all round gun for the stuff we shoot (just outside of canberra). I find the .270 too loud for certain things, and it ends up scaring everything away for miles!! I love the .270 though, shoots flat as a tack, and is accurate at long distances. The .223 is just a more practical gun for the area we shoot. Although I might take the .270 out next time, give it a good work out!

Unfortunately I don't get to shoot as often as I'd like, usually go a few times a year..

Here is my small bore hunting rifle, can hit a dog at 1800m - Barrett .50Cal, when only the best will do

I'd love to buy an M86 but at near $9,000usd plus optics and about $25 a cartridge it aint cheap. They have some good vids on youtube of the Yank special forces cleanin granade turrets at 2100 yards
