Before I proceed, I need to drop an honesty bomb on you all:

The amount I know about cars could be written on a grain of rice. With a chisel.

That might be a slight overstatement, but it isn't far from the mark!

Thanks to you guys I'm learning, but I'm doing it pretty slowly!

Now that that's out of the way, my dilemma is as follows: As the needle nudges upwards towards 2krpm in 3rd gear, it basically just drops back down by anywhere from 250-500 rpm. It's pretty much under all engine conditions (hot, cold, gentle acceleration/near-WOT etc), and only does it in 3rd.

I picked my car up after having my driver side power window fixed (faulty switch as it turns out) and mentioned to the guy I need to book it in AGAIN (3rd time lucky!) to get fuel gauge fixed, and told him about the above at the same time as well.

If anyone has any thoughts for me it'd be much appreciated; always good to go armed with a bit of knowledge when you don't have a lot of your own! Just to make sure they don't try BS me.

Of course, if this is a completely normal phenomenon feel free to point out how dumb I am, thus proving my claim.

:innocent:

I would say its the torque converter locking up mate, shouldn't be anything to worry about. You'll probably find all the other gears do it too, just at different rpm

It has no trouble in any other gears, and certainly has no trouble hitting the high revs or accelerating/hitting high(er) speeds (completely legal speeds of course) while overtaking

If it is Auto it is the torque lock up in the gear box - totaly normal.

Basically Auto gearboxes are mushy by nature with no direct conection. these new gear boxes (for Aus any way) will lock up the connection to provide increased efficiency and performance. I am pretty sure the zf does this in all gears where the older boxes only did it in top gear. when this happens you loose a couple of 100 rpm (think if it like a slipping clutch.

Some one can probably explain it better

but his is getting to 2000rpm then droping to 250-500rpm, that's more than a couple 100rpm, that nearly stalling
