hi all

went to start my car after a short drive to the shops. and Nothing! the RAA came out and it started first time, so confused I tried agin and again and eventually it stopped workin. the raa guy did some tests and came to the conclusion that the started motor was stuffed. so while I had the key to start he gave it a nudge with a metal pole and it kicked into life. the car is a BFmkII turbo with 42000 on the clock. has anyone had any starter motor problems like this and does anyone know how much a new one is.

cheers :innocent:

never heard of a starter issue with these .

usually on other cars ive had it's just the solinoid on the top of the starter that goes can be cheaper than replacing the whole thing but must say never really took much notice of the xr set up as it was solid

have you been driving through a lot of water or something

just make sure you havn't got a rear main seal leak and the starter is getting oil in it.

I had a problem with mine and was do to lots of fried clutch and soot on it to

not slide the gear out on the shaft to engage.

If yours is like this you may hear it spin but the cog wont engage the ring gear.

The RAA tapping the solinoid would help it to engage.

Not a hard job to remove and give it a clean.

Remove it and give it a good wash in kero, rinse it (Pressure clean if have one)

Blow it dry with a compressor, get some lithium grease and smear a very light coat

on the shaft. Then try to pull gear in and out a few times to work the lube into it.

If you cant do so just hook up your cable and wire without inserting it back into position.

Hold it tight and have some one hit the key a few times.

Observe if the gear is spinning out to engaging position.

Now even though it does all this wont mean it is ok as when there is a issue its the load that

stops them.

Also while you have it out, check that there is no burred teeth on your ring gear and starter gear

as this will also stop engagement.

If it does work at least you have saved yourself a starter motor.

Good luck.

I have had that exact problem in my BA MK11 where the cog does not engage at all. It always happens when I am in the middle of no where. I will give your method a try!

Thanks very much for the useful information

Cheers Alf.

Your mods shouldn't affect it for warranty on the starter unless it is directly

the cause of the problem, it may affect the engine drivelines warranty once they see the mods.

Don't leave it to long as if it is gunking up it will only get worst to the point it wont

engage no matter how hard you beat it up.

Just get a can of wd40 and see if there is anyway you can give it a squirt into it.

It may just help enough to get it working till you either pull it out and fix or replace it.

If its manual dont get any on the clutch plate.

Auto and your fine to give it a good dose of wd40.

Make sure you aim for the shaft cog area.
