09/03/09 09:41 AM09/03/09 09:41 AM #1 guy's and girls it's all in your hands.I'm turning 40 this year.I had a knee reconstruction about 6 years ago and hung up the boot's for good. With my confidence returning I had the urge to play competitive sports again .So thought I would play soccer as I thought it would be the safer code to play.we have been it training for about six weeks and I'm battleing injuries.2nd week of training I tore my hip flexer and was out for about 3 weeks and last week I tore the bottom of my calf muscle and will be out for about 2 weeks. So what do I do payed $260.00 for rego and about the same on boots shin pads and goalkeeper gloves,so far it's over the $500.Physio has set me back about $300 and have a couple more visits this week.Do you think the body is telling enough is enough or is the body just trying to adapt.I'm sitting hear with a bag of pea's on my calf now.Has anyone made a return to sports after a long break away.Interested in any thing anyone has to say.Cheers Nick
09/03/09 09:54 AM09/03/09 09:54 AM #3 Author spend a good 10 minutes stretching after the first injury. The second injury was a bit of a freak.Ran into a pot hole the front of the foot landed outside the hole and as I was running tried to push of with the heel as it dropped into the hole and gave the lower leg a great stretch. 09/03/09 10:15 AM09/03/09 10:15 AM #7 I played Rugby for many years and I am now suffering at 38.Bad Back, Neck, both knees, left ankle and right shoulder.Being a big unit, I was always a forward for all my years of playing and now my body is making me pay.I was also a rugby coach for senior grade rugby and saw many caree ending injuries that cost the player a heap of time off work or uni, just to play.Forget the money, if you break something serious, you may be really regretting continuing to play.Retire while you can still walk.

09/03/09 10:29 AM09/03/09 10:29 AM #9 As Clint Eastwood said in Magnum Force "A man's gotta know his limitations"I'm 47 and I know I dont recover like I used to anymore after the body gets a pounding from either a hard day on the yamaha or a few sets of tennis with the kids, past injuries like dislocated shoulder (5 times) dislocated knee, various busted bones mostly from motocross and other sports dont help especially in winter when everything aches . The mind still thinks like a 18 year old but the body is heading for the retirement home.
09/03/09 10:38 AM09/03/09 10:38 AM #10 Author I know I'm taking a huge risk but honestly I really want to play,it's more of a social thing with drinks after training and I have worked so hard on losing weight.Had to buy some new bike riding pants went from a xxl to a large. In the back of my mind injury is there, but then on the other hand you only live once as well.I would rather wear away than rot away.Only if I had a crystal ball.I'm going to really think this one out,but probably like all decisions I made in life will make the wrong one here as well, and that doesn't mean I'm going to play.Cheers NickPS anyone intrested in starting a tenpin bowling league team at southgate?????
