Coolant Leak

Hi Guys,

Noticed a coolant leak on my XR6T coming from the right hand side of the motor on the weekend. Couldn't find where the leak was due to all the the shielding etc. Booked the car into the Ford Dealer to check it out (due to being under warranty).

The result was that a rubber seal at the back of the water pump had failed, resulting in the coolant leak. Due to limited access available on the turbo motors, they replaced the water pump as it's easier than trying to replace the entire seal.

According to the Ford Dealer, this is a common fault in the 6cyl motors from around the time that the AU Falcon was released.

Anyone else had this problem with there XR6T?.

Mate mine was only 3k old and had mine do exactly the same thing. But at least we've got new ones put in.

At least you've picked it up, hopefully it doesn;t get worse for the both of us.

I had the O-ring problem (my only problem) and it was fixed by dealer no problem. All good since. :punchhead:

the o ring problem on the water pump is as common as assholes on any au - ba falcon unfortunately. its not a big job, just a pain.

Virtually every AU that comes through we put a new O ring on........

My xr6t has been to dealer 5 times for this problem. Various fixes tried including o ring twice, hoses replaced,

clamps tighened, and a new water pump and it still leaked until finally the complete turbo / manifold was taken off to replace a hard to get to "coolant pipe" which seems to have fixed it. I would still put up with the inconvenience of a series 1 car if that's what it takes for a while to drive such an awsome car.

Yes, same, is in workshop for 2 days now for water pump orings , more annoying is leaking cluth fluid that needs replacing /fixing. The housing for this is inside the gear box housing so is a major job (they reckon).

Nice car - pitty not made in Germany or Japan.....

Funny thing.

Kept a close eye on my coolant because of info on this forum. (Good)

Surenuf, noticed the little green pools around the 5k mark. Said to meself, self, better top her up a bit and see what happens. Fully intending to make a quick dash to the dealer should it worsen

Over about a 7k period, added (in little bits) about 2 litres of nice green.

Obout 2-3 k's ago.....lo and behold...she leaks no more.

Never seen a cooling system leak fix itself before but there ya go. (Duly reported to the dealer of course)
