Got Access To Some Free Engine Oil!

Ok, this is not actually as dodgy as the title suggests.

My boss has a RX-7 that's set up for tarmac rallying and through his advertisers or whatever he has a bunch of unopened bottles of different high grade full synth oils sitting around in the garage under our office.

He told me I can have as much of it as I want as long as it's suitable for my car.

So I'm wondering if, while you would probably never buy these for a daily driven XR6 Turbo with comparatively low power output due to them being overkill, is it worth me taking him up on the offer because it's free? Will it possibly cause any damage/issues?

The oils he has downstairs are

Castrol Fomula R 10W-60

and

Penrite Sin10 10W-70 (after looking through a few threads, it seems that this is really only suited for super hot applications??)

Obviously if these aren't ideal for the T I'll just go buy some Castrol Edge and be done with it.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated as I've just ticked over 7,500kms since the last oil change and would like to change the oil after work tomorrow (luckily got a hoist and all the tools at the office too).

Cheers slappas!

Shotgun 2 bottles if they are alrite for the T's hehehe

Too thick IMO

Stick with Edge mate

#4

yeh look a bit heavy ,10-40 ,15-40 is a better choice

and this may be a myth but I have had a couple of good mechanics tell me not to constantly change types and brands of oil as they can start to form a sludge if the compounds used by the manufacturers don't mix

Although don't know if it's 100% true or not??

yeh I would agree with the others

we get some ugly looking sh#t coming out of pump barrels and g/box's where I work when different oils are used shell bloke reackons synthetic and regular dont mix well at all and form some nasty looking sludge under high temps

Thanks for the replies fellas.

I did some of my own research just now and noticed that Castrol recommend a 10w-60 Edge Sport for BAs and a 10W-40 Magnatec for BF/FG.

http://www.datateck.com.au/lube/castr_au/default.asp

Not sure exactly why... Are there much tighter clearances in a BF motor compared to a BA?

Anyway, I've decided to play it safe, not cheap and just go buy some Castrol Edge from Repco.

So I want Edge 10w-40 right?

Edge 10-40 should be ok if they make it in that grade, but stay away of magnatec, I used it before in ne of my cars and don't like it at all.

Thanks to you too Dule.

ARGH now I'm back where I started!

This has been covered many times before.

For what it's worth though I emailed Castrol asking them what's best for a modified XR6T/F6 and they said 10W-60.

Just searching through some other threads and noticed a few people including Ninka and Blonk saying that they were big fans of the 10W-60 idea.

It seems like it's one of those things that it depends on who you talk to...

Just so everyone knows.

I spoke directly to the Castrol Tech Line on 2 different occasions and they were very knowledgeable and helpful.

They said they recommend Edge 10w - 60 for XR6T's because after consultation with Ford/FPV when the cars were first built, the general consensus was, that due to it being a turbo and having relatively high underbonnet temps, a 60W would give better wear protection than something like a 10w-40.

He went on to say that "this is even moreso the case in modified XR6T's running up around 300kw" (I didn't even mention modding which makes me think he was pretty onto it).

Anyway, I also spoke to Mick @ Pit Lane and he told me he uses the Edge 10w-60 in our cars because it's what Ford and Castrol recommend.

So being pretty confident that those are 2 reliable sources of advice and knowing that the car is already running Edge 10w-60 with no issues whatsoever, I think that's what I'll stick to.

Oh and a little bonus. I was talking to the Castrol tech guy for about 10 minutes about how my boss has this oil he doesn't need, etc and he told me that Forumula R 10w-60 I mentioned in the first post is exactly the same as Edge 10w-60! And that Castrol just change the names of their products every other year. :stupid:

So that saved me at least $70! :)
