Hey guys,

I've recently seen a 2004 BA MKI T that I'm seriously considering purchasing soon.

I've heard lots of talk around here about certain inherant problems encountered by certain, if not all of the series from BA I Onwards.

Can anyone tell me what I should look for when I see this car? Any known faults or prone issues?

What should I be wary of with this BA I? For example, I've heard they have pretty weak stock valve springs...

Thanks guys - appreciated!

Dan

Dan - Anything before a May 06 build had weak valve springs, which includes all BA's and early BF mk 1's.

Anything built after may 06 had F6 spec engine as standard.

Im pretty sure both auto and manual tranmissions on the mk 1's arent able to hold a lot of power too but depends what you are wanting for the car...

Thanks Mate,

It's a 4 speed auto stock BA MK I...

I was hoping to run about 300 rwkw and not much more...I want to run more power without spending huge dollars improving everything else to cope with it...

Was thinking along the lines of;

F6 Intake

Intercooler

60lb Injectors

Valve Springs

Hi-flow Cat

Flash tune

Not sure of anything else until I get the car...Could the 4spd handle that?

Cheers,

Dan

you wont get 300+ with those mods, close maybe 280ish, and the gearbox "should" handle it but start saving for a rebuild just in case

Yeh I think u would be close to 300 with those mods...

As iTec said, you would be touch and go with the 4 speed and then the problem with that is if it does handle it ok, there will be a time when you want more!

I would see if you can find something with a ZF if you want the auto - might be stretching the budget but in the long run you know that if you want more you can put 380+ rwkw through it safely...

If your open to looking at a manual, at least make sure it comes with a T56 6 speed.

Nah , from late 2003 all turbos had better valve springs as mine had them ive just replaced mine as im going for around 320 at the wheels but its been running fine with the standard ones but was reccomended to change em for the power increase, the 4 speeds will be ok up to 320 -330rwkw as long as they are serviced regularly and stick a good trans cooler on it, if not I will find out soon.

Mate I'd hunt round for a BF, I almost bought an 06 BF XRT ZF for 26k  you will save a fark load of coin in the long run.

And I think Dirty32's is right about the valve springs.

Mate I think u will find u are wrong...

As of May 06 all XR turbo's came with the F6 bottom end, the valve springs are good for 360+ where as you have had to change yours for 320. If you had F6 standard ones you wouldnt have had to change them and I dont think that too many F6 owners are unless going a full rebuild for 400+.

You may be right about the 4 speed auto if they are looked after and have a good trans cooler but def wrong about the valve springs.

Every MK1 BA seems to be different.

My cars a Nov 03 build & has seen 272rwkw on a dyno with not even a whimper from the stock valve springs, yet some cars on here from a similar vintage have had valve float at 240 rwkw.

My stock 4spd is still going strong with 263 rwkw but im putting a cooler on soon to try and prolong its life a bit. Dont flog it to much & put a cooler on it & it should survive 300rwkw at least for a while

One thing mine had was bad steering shudder , that was the main problem with with it, still not fully sorted either. Ford reckoned that was as good as they could get it.
