Its all about the journey my friend, not how fast you get to the destination. ;)

Horse for courses. If all I wanted from my car was awesome qtr mile times, I could have bought a VL!

It all depends on how you will be spending the majority of your day driving the car.

If its peak hour traffic, auto all the way.

If its a bit of a weekend cruiser/bruiser, manual would be the go.

Manuals tend the shed their stock clutches fairly easily.

As has been said autos are quicker and better to drive when you cant be bothered changing gears.

Manuals are much funner around the track I beleive. They also have more of that gut in the throat feeling when accelerating compared to a similiar powered auto T.
