Can anyone recommend a workshop in Perth that can convert my 6sp Manual to 6sp Auto. I have a great XR6T but have to do alot of city driving in my new job. As everyone knows the manuals are a little cumbersome to drive in stop start city traffic and going the auto and keeping my current beast is my preferred option.

Does anyone know what kind of $$$ I would roughly need to complete this conversion? I understand I could sell my manual gear what kind of $$$ could I get for this. (The car is in excellent condition only 48k on the clock)

Is the diff / tailshaft etc the same in the manuals and autos? Is the ECU the same?

I really appreciate any assistance. Ive searched the forums without fully answering my Q's. I understand this might be a rare ask but Im sure it can be done.

Tks Guys

Ian

I'm in Perth and have done this ( I think as the only one crazy enough in Australia), BA 4 speed auto to 6 speed ZF auto.

Let me start by saying this: It is difficult, and quite expensive.

First of all, the BA never came with the 6 speed, and as the control logis is completely different on the 6 speed auto compared to the 4 speed auto, the car has to be electrically and electronically converted to a BF model.

Almost all modules such as PCM, BEM RCM and cluster has to be replaced, and also virtually all wiring harnesses, as the BF is different to the BA, and some wires are different.

If you can find a BF donor car then that will be the easiest, but you will need the lot, including tailshaft where BF centre bearing needs converting to BA version, as the floor pan is slightly different on a BF, and it runs a narrower centre bearing support compared to the BA.

6 Speed also runs a different diff ratio of 2.73 compared to the BA sedan's 3.46.

As you can see, this is a major undertaking.

4 speed auto conversion is much more doable, and if you are interested I have all the parts to do this.

Send me a PM if you want to know more.

I drive my 6 speed manual in traffic every day, and it is fine. Do it if you want an auto by all means, but I wouldnt be doing it and losing your manual personally.

Yeh but sometimes when you heard the sheep you need to do doughnuts in the paddock, and manuals are much better for this.

Hey Guys thanks for your replys. I have read back what you have been through Ninka and it seems alot easier to sell and buy another XR6t. Cheers on the offer of the 4 speed but Im more keen for the 6sp auto.

I have to add these XRT's are great fun :)

I personally think it'd be cheaper to simply change cars. BA 4sp auto to ZF6sp sounds hard enough, but then add in the fact that yours is a factory manual as well, it'd be quite alot of work.

I've got an 4sp auto and was wondering about the reverse... a 6sp manual conversion... autotech told me its more trouble than its worth...

I just wanted to do it for some track fun... I thought an auto on a track would be unheard of....

I didnt realise how different the BA and BFs are... the other reason I wanted a manual is to avoid all the hassles involved with toughening up the box for APS 2...
