definatly should NOT ping on 91 octane petrol. when mine was on the dyno I used 95 ron petrol and the afr's dipped into the 10's at the top end.

what rpm is it pinging at? a grindy turbo wont sound all that different to ping.

Have had mine running on 91 when stuck in the middle of nowhere a few times. Theoretically the engine is supposed to "detune" itself but I wouldn't make a habit of it.

Certainly wasn't any audible pinging.

It even says in the owners manual that it must run on minimum of 95 RON. So would would assume that Ford designed it to run on a MINIMUM of 95 RON.....

mine says this also. Recommended - Premium unleaded

Some more intelligent replies and some not so. When I open up my fuel flap it says 'Ethanol (E10) Fuel suitable' and the owners manual says something like 'premium fuel recommended for maximum performance'. It was a simple question , is it usual for an XR6T to ping using regular unleaded. I was also asking if the engine de-tunes itself to handle the lower octane. Its got nothing to do with being a tight ass!

The 91 fuel that your using could be crap as well, try a different station.

I was a stuck a couple of time and reluctantly filled up with 91. It was smooth as butter. Felt like crap though.

I was in the same situation a month ago. This time I had a flash tune on the car and it was again driving perfect.

Seriously dude, its not supposed to ping. Get 95!!!!

Rev is right, your bigger cat back alters boost pressure (higher) and with low octane fuel its pre-igniting.With those mods you must use 98 oct.It will also be more efficient.
