Done properly they can be quite effective. Especially when you add some metho to the mix

Autospeed sell a trick set up. will get around to fitting one, one day.

you could also go down the route of water/methanol injection, if your going to spray it on your cooler, you might as well spray it in your intake! I think you can get a kit for about $600 from this guy:

water methanol injection

would it not be more effective to get the pipes to not run over a hot motor before going into the intake?

In theory, yes, but don't forget the air in the intake is travelling quite fast, therefore the time intake air spends above the engine is quite small which in turn means I don't think it will make a huge difference, the size of the pipes is another issue. The air obviously has to travel through the intake port of the "hot" motor in the end anyway

I used to run TMIC w/spray in my old WRX and on track days it *seemed* a lot better. I suppose if you can cool it down its going to be a good thing!

I did it for cheap using STi washer bottle, a VL wiper pump etc. Will get one happening when the XR cop's a few mods.

Another mates WRX came from O/S (private import) and it came with built 2.2l etc BUT on the front bar it had nozzles moulded in (much like window washers) and it worked very well and looked factory!
