crans,

I own a business only ISP, so a stable connection is quite easy.

My brother loves his Astrisk system, but I have not had much time to look at it.

The problem is that businesses want a KISS phone system. They want to know that the lift the handset and make a call. They also do not like VOIP through 3rd party providers. There would prefer a branch to branch VOIP with local call hopoff, not relying on VOIP providers, no matter how cheap it is.

Several years ago we built a Linux only server and workstation setup with all free software. the server did everything that MS SBS 2003 did and the workstations did everything a Windows XP PC would do, including office.

Could we sell it ? NOPE

Businesses wanted Microsoft and were not interested in anything else.

this system will run through other providers like telstra optus and any other major company that offers an ISDN service.

The voip provider side of things is more for the smaller business that is really concerned with price. also these voip providers are usefully also for offering trunk out services oversea to cut alot of call costs

The idea of my system is the client sits down with me we design how the system will function I come back install the system and they dont need to touch anything else.

They can be taught to use the very simple interface to add more extensions or make small changes other wise they pay for me to do it

some people using the current systems installed wouldnt know it was different than any other system

It's something we are currently looking into, and would be keen to see how it works.

However, we are wary of relying on VOIP so much as many businesses have experienced difficulties with it.

Ideally we'd like a PABX system to take our incomming calls, with the option to dial-out using VOIP. When the ADSL is down (as it tends to do from time to time), or if it's getting too congested then we could dial out using the standard phone line.

With this system you dont have to reply on VOIP as your main lines you can just uses it to access cheap calls out.

You can use any comms company to install Basic rate ISDN lines for you 1 line carries 2 channels or if you need alot the a Primary Rate ISND that can cary 10 20 or 30 out going lines

Also the system can plug into your regular PSTN line so if you do use only voip. If the voip goes down(or the net connection) you can divert calls to your PSTN service and you wont miss out on anything

But if your a big business Primary Rate ISDN is the way to go

Get a block of 100 numbers and 10 - 30 lines and away you go.

How many active external lines would you need?

We currently run 11 lines, but would like to be able to expand on that when needed.

What sort of phone lines are they?

If you running Basic Rate ISDN or simple PSTN lines then you would be much better going for a 20 line Primary Rate ISDN service

Upgrade to a PRI setup will be alot more cost effective and will allow an upgrade to up to 30 lines on that one cable. when upgrading its a configuration change on your suppliers system no extra cabling needs to be done

Wouldn`t the biggest problem be if your internet or main server went down?

we know how reliable the internet is.

The phone system is seperate from any main server.

The things that will cause it to go down if if the switches go down or the adsl router goes down.

ADSL router will onyl affect it if the system uses a voip server if it uses PRI or BRI then the internet going down dosnt worry it.

Also if Voip was used for the external lines then a backup PSTN system would be used so calls divert to that PSTN service
