14/05/03 05:58 AM14/05/03 05:58 AM #11 I reckon all cars should have a built in 40km/h speed limiter like the V8 Supercars so when you go through a school zone you can slow down. If you get caught speeding you have a 5 min penalty (like Murph) and can't drive anywhere until the time is up! Seriously, I reckon this speed limiter thing would be a good idea.
14/05/03 07:00 AM14/05/03 07:00 AM #12 There is no doubt that for an experienced driver in a modern car in good conditions, 110kmph on the highway from Sydney to Melbourne is a joke. You could easily do it at 140kph and still be safe BUT how do you distinguish between drivers, cars and conditions. The thing that pisses me off even more that 110 kph on highways is 50 or 60 kmph on dead straight 2 lane roads in the city. You never find the cameras on the dangerous twisty roads because most people slow down to a safe speed, they aways set up where it is safest to go over 50kph so they can get the most revenue.

Everyone (well me anyway) would speed to make up the 5 mins though.
15/05/03 12:52 PM15/05/03 12:52 PM #14 Just thought I'd add a little bit of information to this topics, right next to the headline "1725 People Died on Australian Roads" theres that little picture of the falcon, it was an AU wagon, the only person in the car was a driver, and I'm pretty sure he walked away with only minor scratches. Is a bit silly that they put "that" picture next to such a "deadly" headline.
15/05/03 12:59 PM15/05/03 12:59 PM #15 Oh just another thing, something that pisses me off, is when Cops speed for no real reason. I was driving home last thursday night *major hoon night in my area* A marked police car sped past me on the other side of the road doing around 140-150 in an 80 zone, the major thing is he had no lights and no siren on, isn't this a HUGE danger to the public?? But I guess it's okay, cos he's a cop. And we all know that copper's reflex's are SOOOOO much better then the average human being. Also another thing, I've started carrying a camera in my car 24/7, because I once saw a uniformed police chick driving a marked police car, talking on her mobile phone. Would have made a nice front page of the newspaper if I had a camera with me that day. By the way I understand the irony of my operating a camera whilst driving a car.
25/05/03 11:30 AM25/05/03 11:30 AM #16 This is a very interesting topic. When I first started driving marked police cars were everywhere. If you saw one you were on your guard. There was a definite deterent. There can be little doubt that the role of the plice on the roads now is one of random taxation. If it isnt please tell me othewise. Yes we will get the " you got to be kdding"replies from our police posters but why oh why do we not do more about the real issue - lack of driver education.I am sure the plice are doing a fine job. Its just hard when you see so many blatant attempts to cacth speeders rather than other drving offenders like the right lane hoggers, the non indicators the dangerous truckies, the hoons doing doughnuts, the bikers who drive down between cars in peak hours and the list gos on.Can someone please explain how the dark green Late model camira radar cars can book these idiots parked on the footpath behind the bus shelter I might add on the main road near Brisbane Hospital? Actually these cars would be good to buy later as they have only been to the bus stop and back!
02/06/03 08:36 AM02/06/03 08:36 AM #17 Author Good points there DallasQLD, on the news tonight in Melbourne they said the Victorian government is making $260 a minute, yes A MINUTE from speed camera revenue. That is a joke!
02/06/03 09:06 AM02/06/03 09:06 AM #18 I am all for Active Plice presence. Hiding behind bushes isnt active in my view. If they were ut on patrol they would have a field day. They would make far more revenue and start to use the cars we have paid for!

It all comes down to bang for bucks...they get a FAR better return of revenue by putting out stationary canera cars compared to actually driving about nabbing the other more dangerous drivers. At the end of the day the State Governments are only interested in the money and tax by stealth IMOBring on a Federal republic void of states and then perhaps we will get some sensible uniform road lawas and perhaps even decent speed limits on freeways and in rural areas.
02/06/03 09:31 AM02/06/03 09:31 AM #20 I agree Richdave - but imagine how much revenue the could raise if they just booked all of the women in thier Hyundais "off with the fairies" most of the time just driving down the road?.
