Wireless Broadband

Can anyone recommend good wireless broadband?

Its for use in Metro Melbourne.

I know Bigpond is available but its capped at 1GB a month and I will probably want more.

Any suggestions??

I use telstra bigpond, they are ok. I have unlimited download @ 1500 speed. This cost me about $110/month. I don't have much choice where I live. As far as Wireless Routers go, I've got a D-Link and find it to drop out too often. I'd go for a Linksys, they seem to work better based on my experiences.

I have done ALOT of research on this subject for my clients and I can say that the best wireless broadband is Telstra EVDO.

It is available in EVDO in most capitals and 1xRTT in the rest of the country where CDMA is available.

IBurst (chilli, etc) is very oversubscribed and prone to dropouts. My dad use it in Sydney and he would dropout 10x per hour and he is in North Sydney. I have also gor the Vodafone and 3 wireless broadband and they are flakey.

If you plan to remote any servers, you will like the <100ms ping rates, and also the consistancy.

I can run my ISP from the yacht out in the middle of the harbour.

It is worth the money....

I totally agree with Zap.... We have tried most of the options he has listed and the Telstra EVDO service wins out.

Our mobile warriors get a 50 hour / month plan (all you can eat). It is less than $2 per hour, so it is not that expensive really.

It is not rocket fast when you are only getting 1xRTT coverage, but still usable and very flexible.

Cheers,

Aaron

Cheers guys,

So does this just come in the form of a network card, or external modem?

Is it guaranteed to have coverage?

Any links on plans etc?

Thanks,

Thanks,

We use the Sierra PCMCIA cards which Telstra supplies. Link

Another company is called Maxon that do multiple options in external modems and cards. We use them for ships which travel between Melbourne and Devonport. Link
