Pixel art is the right term. ASCII art is art generated using ASCII characters, eg the ones on your keyboard, the ones that can be derived from Alt+(3 numbers), or with the character map, where as pixel art are more comical style.

Pixel Art.. I now know what you mean now, small pixel based pictures (well all pictures are pixel based except for vector based)
