22/02/06 09:44 PM22/02/06 09:44 PM #1 The qld goverment held a road safety summit yesterday not sure on all the groups that attended but geuss what driver trianer groups were not asked to appear wtf. Some of the main thinks to come out of it on one of the safest roads in the country they have decided that to fix the road toll they will be putting fixed speed camera's on it.To my knowlege there has been no death's on the main highway it self since it was built only on the side roads.[ I maybe wrong]Three stricks and your out for drink driver but you must get done for .15 or more all there times. So does that been below that you are not a danger to anybody what aload of .One person who was there was dick johnson and he could believe that this is what they came up with.No driver eduction or defencive driver classes. They also said that if you get court do 20 k's or more over the twice in 12 months you will loose your licence because they will double the points on the second time you are caught. No word on any other things like better roads.Next we will have to drive at 20 k's an hour. The other thing they said is they are going to use more of the audible lines what will this do if your drunk just tell you your not off the road yet.Ian

22/02/06 10:15 PM22/02/06 10:15 PM #4 The only thing that would fix the roadtoll is if the bus carrying these tossers fell off a cliff. They would be then added to the road toll and somebody with half a brain could bring in some sensable policies. It is VERY apparent that the governments in this country have no intention of reducing the road toll, only increasing revenues. If they brought in driver training/eductaion, you can be guaranteed that the road toll would drop. The only problem with that is they could not justify the "safely increasing revenue cameras" that are apparently meant to reduce the road toll, but have proven time after time that they do not.
22/02/06 11:13 PM22/02/06 11:13 PM #5 It is VERY apparent that the governments in this country have no intention of reducing the road toll, only increasing revenues.<{POST_SNAPBACK}>But they do want to bring the road tolls down to zero because it costs them money to have a injured \ dead person on their hands...What they actually do is they work out what it costs to have a person in hospital or dead and then they put a price tag for this cost over a year... They then work out what measures will bring this number down as long as each one of these measures do not cost more than having an injured or dead person once that balance has been acheived they don't give a what happens next (unless it close to election time), that's also why the like speed camera's... The do gooders of society (who have no real idea what their on about, but still make a lot of noise) see something happening, and the gov't makes money... At no point do they actually care about joe blow who is now stuck in a wheel chair or 6 foot under, to them joe is simply a stat...
22/02/06 11:56 PM22/02/06 11:56 PM #6 I guess these people are there to make these decisions, however bad.I wonder who the right people to make these decisions are.I know in NSW the NRMA is very influencial in the process.Interesting sidenote - In Coffs Harbour, the local Federal member punched the roads minister in Parliment over the hundreds of road deaths in our area, and the NRMA commenced the fixourbloodyroads.com campaign.Since this has begun, 3 new speed cameras have been put in black spots and pothole crews shut down one lane somewhere on these sections for patching 24 hours a day. Slowed everyone down but will be interesting to see if it has an effect on the road toll.A problem with no solution.
23/02/06 12:22 AM23/02/06 12:22 AM #7 Author There is ways to fix it but that will cost goverment money.I learnt to drive when I was 10 years old not on the roads but on the farms where we lived I must admit I did not know than how it has made things better for me now. With 24 years of drive with a licence I have had only one accident on pulic roads that I can say was my fault and that was I hit a kangaroo and than road sign.I have been t boned by a hit and run truck I have been hit in the rear at a red light.I have had one accident on a race track but we all have them. The first thing dad said to me was always look ahead of you so you know what is going on up front. The other main thing that is a problem know is we are so peroccupied with not speeding that we have to keep taking our eyes of the road.Driver ed is not the whole answer put it will go a long way to fixing the problem.Ian
23/02/06 12:45 AM23/02/06 12:45 AM #8 Another sidenote: After WW2 the Us gov offered to build a 4 lane toll way from Bris to Melb, the then Fed gov said no thanks it will never be needed. How many lives would this have saved.
23/02/06 01:40 AM23/02/06 01:40 AM #9 The other main thing that is a problem know is we are so peroccupied with not speeding that we have to keep taking our eyes of the road.<{POST_SNAPBACK}>Very true... I know that when I'm driving and there is a speed camera about I put way to much time into making sure I'm doing below 100km/h, if a rooo jumped out in front of me I doubt I'd see it in time, and if I did I doubt the guy behind me would have a chance to stop... Speed camera's IMHO are dangerous things, driver training is the key, anything else is simply revenue raising... eg more coppers \ rbt's \ speed traps, if we had better driver training in the first place none of these things would be needed...
23/02/06 01:53 AM23/02/06 01:53 AM #10 Another sidenote: After WW2 the Us gov offered to build a 4 lane toll way from Bris to Melb, the then Fed gov said no thanks it will never be needed. How many lives would this have saved.Counternote: At that point there never WOULD have been a need for a four lane road, especially a Toll Way anywhere in Australia, let alone between Sydney and Brisbane. Most of the 'Pacific Highway' was dirt and studded with ferry's everwhere (like the ones near Lawrence, Ulmarra etc), not many cars travelled along the road as there weren't many cars in Australia. The majority of long distance transport was by train. The fastest way to reduce the road toll, imho, is to take ALL the semi off the major highways and send everything by government run rail. No semi's means less congestion on the road, also means a hell of a lot less damage to our substandard, contracted road ways and being on trains it can move faster as it can SAFELY go 24hrs per day.It would be a start.Lumpy
