Helmets Please!

Hi guys, this is not a usual topic, but please read it for what it's worth...

I'd like to take this opportunity to remind all with kids to please, please make sure that when they go out riding, or skateboarding, or anything to do with wheels and concrete... make sure that minimum safety gear is worn. Particularly HELMETS.

We all like to think that what we tell our kids gets through, but the fact is that they ARE kids, and memory is sometimes short lived...

I ask this due to the fact that my own 11yo boy is at this moment being watched by my wife and the Nurses/Doctors at Nambour hospital with a fractured skull... all because he forgot to put on his helmet. It was a skate bowl accident that COULD have been much worse.... nevertheless, it was an agonising wait in emergency last night, going through X-rays and Catscans to get at least partially good news that there was no spinal damage. Now comes the watching to see if there is any injury side effects.

I am not looking for sympathy, but would not like to see anybody go through what myself and my wife melinda have done in the last 40 or so hours, as so many othe parents have already also done. Our son Darren was lucky, so far...

I know that we all as adults... or most of us, think safe most of the time... but it only takes one accident to potentially ruin or take away a life. This, our kids NEED to know. Helmets DO save lives.... Bone is NOT stronger than concrete. It's a pretty obvious statement but one that "indestructible kids" need to know, so please remind Yours next time they go out to ride

Thankyou for your time all

ADRIAN

Hey man, all the best for your son, good news that he has not suffered a spinal injury.

I feel for you guys in this time but the lucky thing is, it wasn't more serious.

You feel at your worst when it's your flesh & blood lying there and you feel helpless, I know it's not the same but my wife & I had our now 14 month old (8 months old at the time) in A&E with an Anaphylaxis reaction to peanut butter, it was just the worst feeling in the world.

Hang in there man, he'll be out of hospital before you know it.

Hope the young bloke gets well soon mate. Every time i see a young kid riding a pushbike or skate board without a helment i cringe. i busted a set of forks in my mountain biking days and landed on my head. the only reason im still here or not a vegetable is because of the piece of foam(the helmet) i had strapped to my head. i also really irks me that professional "xtreme" sports men set the example by preforming in show and comps without a lid on.....

No good mate.....hope he makes a quick and full recovery....and yes, kids will always be kids... that's why us adults need to get on their backs even though they will hate us for it in the short run....

Hi guys,

Thanx all for the thoughts and best wishes. Myself and family appreciate them both.

My boy is now home, sooner than doctors expected. I'm glad to say that these are his words: 'I'm NEVER riding without a helmet again. I have learnt the hard way that I HAVE to wear it Dad'.

At least for now I can be assured that he will not forget this experience in a hurry.

Once again, thanx all for your support.

Adrian.
