A Surprise Chase

Yesterday coming home via the normal back road I entered into a round a bout. As I entered there was a small grey car already in the bout I thought about giving way to. But no, just put the foot down, it kicked back and I soon heard the turbo spooling. Looked in the mirror and this small grey car was stuck up my rear. I held the throttle to 120klm at which time a small gap appeared between us.

I didn't want to out race this other car just wanted to prove I could out gun it. All I could tell of the car was that it had a VW badge in the grille. When I turned off I spotted a trade plate on the rear, so today I went past the VW dealer and there it was a Golf GTI.

That was a shock to be kept up with in a small car. But now I have read the specs I can see how. Size does matter.

Time for some Mod's then !

14sec isnt that fast these days.

You will find a new taxi isnt that much slower than a T or gen3 and you really have to gun it to keep ahead.

that's why I love my moded T...I can be in any gear, any rev, any distance and the T will have your VW made in the shade :spoton:

You'll love every minute of it !

You WILL notice a 40rwkw gain :)

First thing you notice is that you have to change gears faster because the taco needle moves quicker.

Great to see the small VW being driven responsibly by the Dealer for the new owner.....

Hope you dropped in and told em..... :msm:

Yep... sticks in throat but sometimes you gotta be a dobber...

I get a bit sick of hired help at dealerships and service shops having cheap thrills in cars they don't own.

I picked mine up one day with 30km extra on the clock, 1/8th of a fuel tank lower and the average fuel consumtion reduced to 33l/100km. And that was just to get the windows tinted! Not surprisingly they claimed it couldn't have been them. Some of these guys got dog turds where the brain is meant to go.

By the way, those little Golf GTi's are a nice piece of kit - great little city car. Take one for a test drive.

Hate it when that kind of thing happens when you dont expect it!

Am I looking at the right car though - the VW site has the GTI doing 0-100 in 6.9 - you should have killed it except perhaps off the line. And once you start going 100-ish, I would expect a T would shatter it with ease.

I raced a little Mercedes 2 door 350SLK, and it whipped me off the line (supercharger to be thanked for that..with the help of him turning the corner ahead of me and putting down the power first) but once about 50kmh I started to reel it in at a steady (but slowish) pace. This surprised me as the figures are supposed to be 5.6sec 0-100 so reeling it in under 100kmh should not have been possible. And yes, he was going for it! We did that twice...and each launch I did was a soft launch in a manual (1000rpm or so until clutch all the way out - a slow but clutch friendly way to launch!)

Another car that surprised me and went better than expected was an X5. No badges or exhaust visible from the back. Im assuming the 4.8is petrol model. He was driving quite agreessively which made me notice him ahead. He put the power down very well off the lights and took off damn fast. I could catch up without too much problem, but his launching was pretty decent for such a heavy car (2200kg!). I just checked their site - 265kW/500Nm, 0-100 in 6.1 so that's definitely the one I was up against. I could tell he wasnt used to someone reeling him in and passing him :)

Naturally, all events mentioned here took place on off-road private race tracks with safety staff on hand. All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

The Golf GTi I was so close of buying one! but I end up getting a BA MKII XR6T

I could not spend close to 50K on a small hatch back!.

Speaking of big 4WD's giving you hell, try lining a Porsch Cayanne Turbo up (on a private road of course) things dont go as easy as you'd expected!

368kw(500Bhp), 700Nm 0-100 in 5.3sec. My car isn't slow but couldn't catch this little 4WD till 100km+. I think she was on her way to drop the kids off at school too!!!
