Video Editing Software

I bought a new dvd video camera the other week and am wanting some opinions on what editing software people recommend that supports the VOB file format and doesnt cost the earth (I dont want to spend anymore than $250) since the camera creates menus and stuff from the camera so you can watch it back on a dvd player there wasnt any bundled editing software.

So yeah, what are some guys using?

I use Studio 9 with the latest patch .. and also a SATA RAID array because I found the rendering process before making the video was maxing out my hard drive.

The thing I like about S9 is that it'll make just about every format that I can ever think of using. What I don't like is it'sa bit tough to get your head around initially and without the patches and on a slower computer, it'll probably be unreliable.

I use adobe premiere. Perhaps you can hunt around for a cheaper copy but the program is one of the best with many options and an excellent editing interface.

Good luck :spoton:

Dazza,

I have 3 different ones all for DVD editing and they vary greatly in functionality.

Geeseman's suggestion of Adobe Premier is a good one, but it is a Professional package that costs over $4,000.00. I have it and rearly use it unless I need special effects or really complicated tasks.

If all you want to do is rip home movies to DVD, have a look at Microsoft Moviemaker 2, it comes FREE with Windows XP. It is a good start and will let you do basic editing and ripping.

The next step would be a middle package like Studio 9 / DVD movie pro / etc. These would vary in price from $100-$1,000.

You may want to check what software you already have as most DVD burners / DV cameras / Firewire cards and video cards come with some sort of DVD editing software.

I hope this helps

I got my firewire card and all that stuff long before you could buy a DVD burner for a reasonable price, so none of the bundled software supported DVD burning. What I want it for is basically editing clips from home movies and being able to add in basic transition effects, titles and menus (I have heaps of test & tune footage that needs proper sorting out). I was looking at a version of Ulead video studio 9, or the one xa-coupe mentioned since they are both around the price I wanted to pay. Any thoughts on the Ulead product?
