It's a sellers market.

I was offered $17k trade-in yesterday on my wifes 97 rex, where redbook trade-in value is 18-20k. Car is in excellent condition with sunroof and 17' wheeels and only 74000km travelled.

I asked for $20k minimum and was ready to place an order on a new Ford turbo there and then ($57 on road cost).

No deal.

I don't want the hassle of a private sale, but may have to.

I think Ford at the moment have such a backlog that they don't really care, and they're trying to maximise profit margins.

I've bought 8 brand new cars over the last 20 years, and can't recall this situation.

I was told delivery in August for an order now.

If there are any other dealers out there who want to do a deal please let me know. I'm in Sydney. (City Ford don't bother emailing me unless you really want my business).

Iwas only offered $1500 trade in on my EB2 I6 GLi lowered 17s stereo 185000km, and they really didn't even want it for that. I sold it privately for $4500, I was trying to get $5000 so close enough I guess.

Mate, Dealer trade-ins always suck!

I had a AUII XR6 VCT 2 years old with 95,000km on it. Tradein at the dealers was $20,000 - $21,000. I knew it would take a while to sell so I ordered the T and worked the trading post and then eventualy got $24,500 for it. (that's $4,500 over the trade...)

Given that it IS going to take a while to get the "T" I would do as someone has suggested. Gte the dealer to agree on a trade price now and make them write it in the contract. Advise them that you will try and sell privately and if you do then good on ya.. You win. If you still have it when the "T" arrives then you know you ave tried.... and you still get the $4K they have offered today...

Good luck.

THe T ive ordered is $55,000 on the road.

My currnet BMW was $80K 2.5 years ago.

Current retail is $57 - $61K

Trade value is high forties (accouring to all sources I could find)

The offered trade was $41K.... wtf

Bottom line is they want to pay $41K, spend nothing on it then turn anround and sell it for $20K profit

I traded a '02 VU ss ute on the XRT and I recieved a LOT more than I expected from a Ford dealer. The ute only had 4500 K's on it, and I only lost $3500 from new. Trading the ute in was the best thing I could have done, as the XRT is the best thing since slice bread.

No surpises here. I traded my car a couple of months ago when getting my T. Unfortunately a few realities hit home.

1) They don't give a rats a*** how clean and shiny your car looks - they can achieve the same look on any car after and hour out the back with their detailers!!

2) You will never get the same price that you can get for your car privately - as we all know, getting a car roadworthy, advertising the car and dealing with potential buyers is HARD WORK!! Not having to do that is worth a drop in price in my view.

3) They are a business there to make money - they have to allow for some profit on the car as does the dealer they sell it to - they are not there to do any of us any favours (no matter what they say, they make money on a trade in).

Weigh up what your time and efforts are worth to sell the car yourself - if you think the extra you can get is worth the effort then start selling the car privately (beware though - last time I sold a car privately the guy came back to my house a week later demanding another tyre ....... weirdo - yes ........ but put me off selling my car to a stranger who knows where I live!!). Good Luck!!

xrcism .... I would not have thought of an happy nutter knowing where I lived after the car I sold him/her broke down as cars do !! (especially when you have just bought/sold the car)

got to be worth something for the dealer to take care of the outgoing, especially if the car is reaching the end of it's life. Better than some bunny boiler buying your old car privately...
