Auto Trans Failure Indicator!

I let my brother drive my car around the block yesterday  and he stopped outside my house and said 'why is the 'D' blinking on the dash, and it wont kickdown?' I looked it up in the manual and it said when it flashes the selected gear at you it means there is 'an internal automatic transmission failure'. He says he tried downshifting manually and it wouldn't then the error came up.

Turned the car off and back on and there was no more error.. I haven't noticed the trans playing up at all or anything since or even before this one off problem.. I am taking it to Ford in a few weeks but should I be worried or not? Just seemed a strange thing to happen..

Did you notice if the oil temp light was on as that happens if the trans temp is too high, the D flashes as well.

Hey Dean,

The old man has had that problem before with the oil temp/trans overheat on a trackday, so that was in the back of my mind, but it wasn't that error, plus it was driven literally around the block after sitting there all night, so I can't see how the trans could have overheated!

What gear was it stuck in?

Get them to put their scanner on it to see what error code shows up.

There are issues with the soleniods and software.

Your brother didnt accidently try and down shift into first at a too high speed, I know it wont allow you to but it might do something strange if you try more than once. Weird.

Dazza - I am guessing that's maybe he did, he has only driven it once or twice, so he may have shifted it the wrong way, going down instead of up. But I thought of this and tried it and it didn't do anything when I tried, just wouldn't shift down a gear..

What happens when it overboosts? Does anything flash up on the dash?
